I understand the concept of rivalries absolutely but at the same time, if another SEC team’s loss won’t directly benefit my school and unless they’re actually playing us, I’m always going to root for the SEC. It’s about respect for your opponents and knowing you play the toughest teams around. In addition, SEC teams winning often speaks to the strength of the conference and resultantly the strength of each individual team as well.
Nobody but the SEC and Big 10 give a shit about “conference pride”, its all about how your school does. God knows how many basketball titles the ACC has won, but I could care less because it wasn’t my college. If youre an Auburn fan or a SCAR fan than congratulations, job well done. But if you’re not then you have no reason to brag about how a team that your college had to face a couple of times just won a title.
My school is in the same conference as Duke and UNC, they win basketball like every fucking year, and I always pull against them. When Miami was excelling in football, I was pulling against them. Just like how Im sure Bama was pulling against Auburn in the National championship.
Its the shitty SEC athletic progams like Ole Miss/Vanderbilt/Miss St/Arkansas etc.. who have the conference pride because they have nothing else to pull for since their teams never win jack shit.
Basically the point Im trying to make here is that Auburn doesn’t pull for ‘Bama no matter what (I know that because my family went there), same thing with Ohio State never pulling for Michigan. But its these bottom tier (athletically speaking) schools that are the ones who are all hoo-rah about their conference excelling because its all they have.
No doubt, I don’t cheer for Texas in shit. But the SEC is different. The reason I don’t cheer for Tech, Texas, Baylor, et al. is because they are our recruiting opponents.
In the SEC they sort of realize that the recruiting will be tough as shit no matter what, so they go ahead and root for the conference. Obviously Bama and Auburn don’t root for each other because the hate is so deep, but neither do the “shitty SEC athletic programs” that are rivals like Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Lucas: Fair enough, but my general point is that its like these athletic powerhouses (UGA/UF/’Bama/Auburn etc… are all pissed when a different powerhouse from the SEC wins, while these smaller schools are bragging about being associated with the powerhouses
And I’m disagreeing. Georgia and Florida don’t root for each other. Ole Miss and Miss State don’t root for each other. Bama and Auburn don’t root for each other. But in my experience Bama fans will root for Georgia, Florida, etc. Any SEC team but Auburn. And vice versa. Or the same with say Florida and Auburn.
Maybe it differs by individuals, but my family who are all Auburn alum were sure as hell pulling against LSU and against Florida in the recent years. It’s sort of an envy thing, they live around LSU fans and Florida fans and don’t wanna hear all their “we’re #1” bull shit. If Auburn didn’t win they didn’t want any team Auburn faced to win either. Again maybe it differs by area, and maybe this is just the Auburn fans, but thats what Ive experienced.
From what I’ve seen, all the top sec schools are rivals. Because every year one of those teams is gonna be in the NC and the other SEC schools are pissed its not them
I felt the need to comment here for a few reasons..
1. UGA an athletic powerhouse? Really? What are they good at? I didn’t think we were counting gymnastics.
2. If you have to root for your conference, it’s proof your team sucks. I have never and will never root for my rival. In fact, the only time I even think about rooting for my conference is in bowl game play and usually it’s because I have money on them. Even then, I’d rather see a good football game, and if a team from my conference loses, the only remorse I’d have would be that they didn’t cover the spread.
I live in Georgia and Georgia fans (every single on of them) roots for conference. I actually saw UGA fans celebrating Auburns championship. My experience is the same with auburn fans as well. My favorite argument is when people say Ohio State was over rated in 2007 when they lost to LSU. People seem to forget Ohio St. had major injuries, the game might had well been in Death Valley, and nobody in the SEC could beat LSU that year either.
My point here is that just because your team lost a bunch of games to a team, that doesn’t mean you’re better than whoever they’re playing.
Theodore: if no one else in the SEC could beat LSU that year, why were they the first 2-loss national champions? And about your argument for Ohio St on where it was played, remember that a decent at best Arkansas team beat LSU in the real death valley on the final game of the regular season, also
Y’all are fucking retarded. Having this long argument over the internet. But I do feel the need to add my two cents.
1) Whoever said the SEC doesn’t understand rivalries is an idiot. I hate my rivals. When someone tells me they are a UF or Bama fan I start off hating them for that sole reason alone.
2) I want my rivals to do well. I want them to be contenders. I want them to best 2nd best. Who wants to have a rivalry with a shitty school. Why would you want to be a football rival with UK or Vandy? The answer is you wouldn’t. What makes rivalries great is that the rivalry game MEANS something. Why do you think the AU vs. Bama is such a big deal? Because if you don’t beat your rival your not going to the SEC/Natty championship and they might! Or UT vs. UF in the 80’s and 90’s you had to win that game to go on to the SEC championship and the National title.
3) I want my rival to win every game accept when they play me. That way I can say my school was the reason they couldn’t make it to the _________ championship.
I don’t root for ole ole miss. Ever. Then again they don’t have to ever worry about winning. When the SEC wins, it’s good for recruiting. People wanna go play for a great team like Bama, Florida or LSU or they want to beat those teams. Winning keeps it competitive. There is nothing wrong with having pride in that. It’s why everyone looks forward to bama-LSU or Georgia-Florida…who gives a fuck about Ohio state-Michigan? If that shit is a rivalry, well you big 10 **** can enjoy that and keep thinking everyone else cares. We’ll keep winning national championships and making fun of you.
Im not denying the SEC is the best conference, I agree with that. What Im saying is that the fact that the SEC is the best conference means jack shit to all teams not winning. Thats some really weak sauce if a fucking Miss ST fan decides to brag bout SCAR’s victory in the CWS, just because they are associated by conference.
When it comes to fratting, yes the SEC has the most consistently fratty schools, but again it all comes down to the individual school. I think Clemson frats a hell of a lot harder than say Florida.
“Say Florida” has way more tradition than your dumbass school Clemson can even imagine. My fraternity was founded at UF than your school was founded period. Fuck off.
And they’ve been wearing Jean shorts ever since. Tradition doesn’t equal excellence. We (society) used to sacrifice virgins and we don’t do that anymore.
Allow me to drunkenly explain conference pride in the SEC. I fucking despise each and every sonofabitch in this conference that is not a Louisiana State Tiger. I fucking wish fire and brimstone upon all of them. But you kjnow what, I respect the SHIT out of everybody here, even those nerds at Vandy. Because when my Tigers beat Florida, or Bama, or Ole Miss, or even when they lose (God forbid), I want everyone to know that we won/lost to one of the best fucking teams in this fantastic fucking country. And to top it all off, the SEC has come to represent the pride of the South. When considered in that context, it is only fitting that the South win every fucking title in every fucking sport, minus African Handball, and we even have a couple schools that rip tits at that.
Long story short, the SEC is better than everyone. Literally everyone. If you don’t like it, fuck off and die.
damn right…a team from any other conference couldnt last 3 weeks in the SEC. This was fucking hilarious, and a great explanation even though my hogs beat yall the past few years and are comin down to death valley this year with the national championship on our mind. its gonna be a great fucking game.
I’m an LSU alum but I’m on the USC wagon. Hopefully y’all can prevail over the jort wearing gaytors
