and exactly Sperrys Frattin Hard, since i’ve graduated a few months ago, over $500 has come out of my paychecks to go towards social security, which sucks knowing i’ll never get to see any of that when i’m retired and need it.
His statement is right on, but unfortunately there are too many Democrats that take that statement and make it seem like such a big deal. I’d rather have a president who isn’t afraid to say what he thinks instead of the guy we have now who gives the impression that everything is fine and dandy in our country at the moment.
It’s going to go bankrupt within 25-30 years, and all of us young people paying into it will never see a dime. In that sense, it IS a ponzi scheme. I hate Rick Perry (his arrogance and religious shenanigans will only help Obama get re-elected), but he’s right here.
Social Security is worse than a Ponzi scheme. Ponzi schemes do not require all legal working citizens to participate, but Social Security does. Social Security should be optional. When I retire I expect to have a well diversified portfolio, and I do not want this crock of shit to be one of “securities” in that portfolio.
Exactly. Our parents have paid in millions over their lives and they’ll probably see one quarter of what they deserve to get back. It’s not a matter of needing it, much like you don’t need to be in college (because dumb asses like you should be in trade school). They are entitled to seeing that money. Calling it “welfare for the elderly” might be one of the most irrational things that I’ve ever heard; have fun being a mid-level business executive your whole life, champ.
Rick Perry is a perfect media story because he’s an arrogant loudmouth with great soundbites. He’d be a horrible president and cannot beat Obama. He has no ideas (see: any debate so far. He’s a tool).
1. Social Security is not a savings account where everything you paid in during your life is guaranteed when you retired. Nothing is guaranteed. If they run out, they don’t have to pay you anything back.
2. You get the same amount per month no matter what your income was in the workforce. Ex: Someone who made 6 figures for 40 years, and someone that made minimum wage for 40 years both paid different amounts, yet their Social Security check is the same amount each month.
3. If there were less people in the workforce than retired out of the workforce, we wouldn’t be able to afford to pay for all of their monthly checks. As the cost of living and inflation goes up, it’s more expensive to have more kids, yet if we stop, the workforce will be too small in the future.
4. Social Security was always meant to be temporary, even back when it was designed. It shouldn’t have been going on this long.
Either make Social Security enrollment optional, raise the retirement age, or adjust the monthly checks so those that paid less in, get less back.
Taking money from one investor to pay a previous investor, all the while the latter investors likely will not see a dime of their investment. To argue social security is not indeed the definition of a ponzi scheme would be foolhardy.
Social Security is certainly a Ponzi Scheme, even liberal politicians know it. The only people that don’t think it’s a Ponzi Scheme are the typical, un-informed, and ignorant liberal everyday citizens. They don’t know that their stupidity, and ignorance is being taken advantage of by Big-Government politicians to essentially “buy” their vote. It’s about time someone had the balls to call out something that’s been ripping off Americans for the last 80 or so years. From a political standpoint, what Rick Perry said was not the smartest thing. From a truth standpoint, it was spot on. This is why he will have my vote.
You do know that in proportion to the GNP Democrats increase the size of government and Republicans generally shrink the size of government? Also, I used the word Liberal. I did not mention anything about Democrats or Republicans. Conservatives believe in smaller government, more freedom ,and more individual responsibility. Liberal believe the opposite. It’s important that you realize the difference between arguments about “Parties” and “Political Ideology”.
If conservatives believe in more freedom then why did they spearhead the PATRIOT Act?
Those who give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety-Ben Franklin
Also, your view of Liberal/Conservative is tragically flawed. They are dynamic and change meaning with times.
Also, conservatives are the ones who restrict personal freedom. Modern day liberals believe that government can operate some things better than the private sector.
I for one, would hate to see a private police force, private fire department, all research be privatized, etc…
Essential liberty? Why the fuck should anyone care if the government scans their international phone calls for terrorist plots unless they are a terrorist?
Let me answer you in regards to the Patriot Act, this was a policy put in to place under the Bush Administration, and was voted and approved by a majority democrat house of representatives. This is where the difference of Republican and conservative comes in to play, this was not a “Conservative” policy. This was a Liberal policy voted in by a Democratic majority in the house of reps, and a Republican president. Just because you are Republican does not mean you are conservative, and vice versa. Most of the time it does. But, not in this specific issue.
Also, what makes you think I am advocating for a private police force or fire department? This is the propaganda that many of you liberals buy into with out any fact. There are some that would want to privatize but they are the extreme minority (libertarians mostly).
The private sector is normally thought of as businesses, and free enterprise (you were saying it was the police force and fire department). Government regulations and higher taxes are the very opposite of freedom.
Please tell me conservatives restrict freedom. By the way, I love your quote by Ben Franklin and I agree. He was a great conservative.
And this comment is why he will never become president of the United States.
14 years ago at 10:50 amActually, that’s a fairly accurate description of how Social Security is being used right now.
14 years ago at 10:51 amSocial Security = Welfare for the elderly. Also anyone that is college age now more than likely won’t see a dime of it.
14 years ago at 10:56 amI’m sure every TFM frequenter is worried about the comments they made on here when they run for president.

14 years ago at 12:11 pmFun facts about Social Security:
