Agreed. He bought Pixar for $10 million and sold it for $7 billion. He returned to Apple and built it into one of the most successful companies in the world, with more cash in reserve than the US Treasury. It all started in his garage. Total American Dream Move.
I think it’s hilarious how much praise someone gets once they die. No post about Steve Jobs would ever have gotten posted even 3 days ago. If one did get on to the wall it would have the same amount of comments as this post. The difference would be everyone calling him a goddamn geed and talking about how NF turtlenecks are.
Upper Fratosphere, I stand by you sir. Making a ton of money and being internationally recognized, that’s pretty awesome, but Steve Jobs was a GDI. Everything about him as a person, not his accomplishments, are nothing close to what we would praise and call a Fraternity man.
^^^If all this isn’t motivation for finding a cure, I don’t know what is. It is saddening to see the sheer numbers of people who’s lives have been ripped apart by this horrific disease. My heart and prayers go out to all of you, and I pray we may find a cure.
*her best friend to stomach cancer and we lost our great grandfather to prostate cancer. Fuck cancer. All of you fine gents studying to be doctors, keep up the hard work and find a cure.
My mother may not see her next birthday because of breast and liver cancer. She is one of the authors of a book about praying through cancer and an AXO. I’d say at least half of her pledge class has made us food or has done something for us in one way, shape, or form. And geeds say we buy friends. Find a cure.
Several brothers have lost family members to pancreatic cancer so we started a philanthropy for pancreatic cancer research a few years back. My father is also fighting brain cancer right now and still hanging in there. My heart goes out to everyone here who lost someone to cancer. Fucking sucks. Frat on gentlemen.
I lost a grandmother to lung cancer and the grandfather to skin cancer. And two months ago I lost a brother (not blood but you know what im saying) to leukemia. FUCK CANCER. Here’s to those of you that sponsor/donate to finding a cure. I give my thanks. Frat on gentleman!
What did he innovate? MP3 players were already patented by Dell and HP. Tablets have been around since the early 90s, and the design was featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey (See Samsung’s rebuttal for one of the greatest arguments ever). Wozniak designed the Macintosh and the Apple/Apple II. Job’s iPhone design was also the reason it was recalled (the whole “holding it the wrong way issue”), because it worked fine before he redesigned the aluminum casing. He was a marketer, not an innovator. An innovator is someone like Pres Eckert or Gates. Jobs is the Paul Allen of Apple, without the startup wealth.
He didn’t innovate either. The invention of a portable music player preceded the innovation of an mp3 player by another company. All he did was advertise heavily for his. Same with the tablet. An innovator improves and reinvents things, which he did not. He just put it in a polished or brushed aluminum casing.
Generally I have found that Piker is a pretty funny and intelligent troll, but as a current HBS student I can say that your analysis of Steve Jobs is completely incorrect. He didn’t invent anything, correct. His genius lies in his ability to create products that are easy to use. The MP3 player before the ipod was a mildly complicated machine, the ipod interface is something that everyone can use. The same goes with his operating systems and other products. Did he invent the computer or the mp3 player or the tablet? no, but he did create the easiest to use electronic devices we’ve ever seen. Think about the first time you saw an ipod, you knew how to use it the second you opened its box. That’s pretty impressive.
“but more importantly, he was a better human being.”
Bullshit. Steve Jobs was a completely unethical prick. He eliminated all charity, never donated to charity. Charged enormous markups for outdated technology that was repackaged as innovative. Outsourced cheap labor to the third world. Took a salary of 1$ for several years while receiving millions in “gifts” from the Board.
He was a douche. The world is better off without him and will be better off as long as these terrible business men continue to die.
Next up, there’s a new trend on TFM where suddenly Long-sleeved black shirts, tucked into blue jeans have been deemed “Frat.”
He may have been a successful business man and cancer is a horrible disease, but the hypocrisy from all of you right now is insane. One day anyone wearing the aforementioned wardrobe would be considered an untouchable, today that untouchable gets glorified on TFM?
He did a lot of great things and yes people should respect him, but there are ways of showing respect. But the mind boggling irony here is the fact that a man (who by all means would be considered a “nerd” and hailed by the “nerd” crowd) is being praised on a site that bashes most of his followers and original marketing demographics, by users now sitting and typing away on computers he probably created on how to remember this man, whereas any day of the week they would (in most of your own words) “haze the balls of such a geed,” the irony is just fucking ridiculous.
And no I don’t care about any typos or grammatical errors there are in my post. This site used to be fun. It’s now created a new fucking culture all on its own that didn’t exist in the fraternity community not even a year ago. You fucking hypocrites on this site make me God damn sick. You want to talk about respect? How about start respecting “All men,” and “leading by example” as I’m sure many of you were instructed during your days standing in line-ups as brothers screamed your Fraternity’s Objects in your face (I know I was), drilling into your skulls what it means to be a Fraternity Man, which is not so much the elitist bullshit oligarchy crap that is spewed on here every day, but by standing up for what’s right, doing what your father told you from day one to always stand up for the little guy, to be the example, not the exception.
Do you ever stop and think why we do philanthropies and charity events? Do you know why it is the Greek system? Because the Greek man was hailed to be a pinnacle and idealized man; the philosopher, the leader, the great thinker and orator who’s wisdom and decisions made his unquestionable and desirable. Those letters are your chest, they mean something, they’re not some fucking decoration.
I’m done with this site. None of you are men. You will respect this man today and the next disown all who are like him, because they are not like you.
^Although donating to the left, he donated to numerous charities in an anonymous fashion because he did not seek recognition. He is an innovator and a genius. How dare you criticize his wisdom and his life. Please take laps and consume gratuitous amounts of sodium fluoride in his honor.
It’s true he scrapped Apples philanthropy, but when was it a requirement to be philanthropic? He may not have been very charitable, but he built an empire that employs tens of thousands. Charity is giving a man a fish so he can eat for a day, capitalism is teaching a man to fish.
Captain, you can go fuck yourself. That was the single most hypocritical thing I have ever read. When it comes to serious matters, many of the things we “bash” are completely irrelevant. I wish some people could appreciate satire every once in a while. I respect almost anyone that lives their life honestly, even though my opinions may differ. Respect your country, pay your dues, earn your money, and raise the next generation to make the great United States of America a better place. RIP Steve Jobs.
SC you remain one of the most vile pieces of shit on this site. You do nothing but troll and be as contrarian as you can, but please understand you are the lowest form of life imaginable. More importantly, you are pretty much always incorrect. Grow the fuck up.
And brohab, you are even worse. You are well goddamn aware this site is full of satire but when push comes to shove, fraternity men are gentlemen. Did you truly expect everyone would say “fuck Jobs”? If so, then it’s better you do leave this site. Grow up. The outside world has a lot of shit for you to deal with sport, sack up.
Good, no one will miss you CaptainBrohab, go fuck yourself. And as for you hoosierfrat43, you can go fuck yourself as well. This man passed away with an incurable disease. If you desire to say something bad about him, I suggest you don’t say shit at all. You are entitled to your own opinions, but don’t disrespect the man God dammit.
I don’t agree with everything captain said he brings up a point. If I submitted Steve Jobs. TFM a week ago it would of made it on fail Friday. How is this a total frat move? I have respect for the man but this just isn’t the site for it.
@CaptainBrohab I think making billions of dollars gives you the right to wear whatever the fuck you want, especially while dealing with cancer. You sir are nothing but smegma, kill yourself.
In an attempt to settle this dispute, maybe we can agree that the first portion of this TFM, “Going out on top after building the world’s largest company”, is in fact a TFM… however the individual Steve Jobs, is not. For that matter, does anyone know if he was actually Greek?
This is the same debate that we all had after watching the clearly visible geed (cargo shorts, cut off redneck tee, flip flops) make a fratty move by diving into a pool to catch a ball at the home run derby, while keeping his beer above water and unspilt… Except no-one died during that.
I have mad respect for what you’re saying, but I feel that you’re generalizing too much. Not everyone on this site is “that asshole.” To deny the influence Mr. Jobs had in history is asinine and disrespectful, I agree. He was a man of vision who changed the world. It is because of him that we can swipe our phones and make a phone call (argue that fact if you want, but let’s be honest). You are completely within your right to be done with this site, but please do not leave it with the impression that every person who reads this has no concept of human decency.
I wish I’d read your response sooner…that’s exactly what I was going for, but I’m a few drinks deep. That’s not meant to be an “ooh look at me” either…that’s just meant to explain that you said what I wanted to say.
Just a correction: He DROPPED out of Reed college after a semester. He called up William Hewlett of Hewlett-Packard to ask for parts for a school project and got a job out of it. In my opinion- he may have dressed like a nerd and in some cases acted like one but he embodies many qualities I hope to see in the future businessmen that will come of the fraternity men on this site. RIP Steve Jobs.
Brohab, you strike me as one of those assholes that wears pastel shorts, button ups, and sperrys just because TFM deemed it frat. Why don’t you go take a sugar frosted fuck, because it’s not the clothes that make someone fratty, nor do they make him a gentleman. It’s what you find in his mind and in his heart. I dress like a total piece of shit, I’m talking rings, bracelets, and necklaces, but I guarantee you, without uncertainty or reservation, that I am more of a class act than you could ever be. So please, bend yourself over, and go fuck yourself.
as another hoosier by defination, yet a boilermaker by blood. go fuck yourself hoosierfrat43. your stupidity directly reflects your education in the shithole that is bloomington indiana. jobs did great things for cancer research and ive lost loved ones to cancer. so it doesnt matter where he went to school or what house he was in. in my heart he will always be frat as fuck. TFM (unlike your gay ass)
The word “cuz” and complete lack of grammar. NF. His turtlenecks probably cost more than your tuition and it’s still considered pocket change to him. That, my friend, is FaF.
His speech was absolutely amazing. “Death is a destination we all share… It clears out the old to make change for the new.” Well said sir, well said. You will be missed.
Whether you liked him or not, he changed the world. He created the personal computer, smart phone as we know it, the mp3 player as we know it, and the tablet industry.
R.I.P. Steve Jobs
This may be a bit much. While it is inarguable that Steve Jobs was a creative genius and truly inspiring business man, to say he changed the world may be a tad generous. Yes, it is convenient that you and I can now look up stats on ESPN, watch the stock market, or simply check Facebook on our phones, but it is merely that: convenient. Undoubtedly, Apple has changed the American lifestyle, but, as a whole, it is a company that has not reached much further than this. Those of us on this site are fortunate enough to have access to the numerous inventions Jobs has supplied us with, but the world in general is not. While I, and most the people on this site, could never dream of the intelligence and innovation this man has shown in his short life, it is arrogant and ignorant to say he changed the world.
That being said, having lost an uncle to adrenal cancer earlier this year, my heart goes out to his family and loved ones in their time of grief.
Did not change the world? His innovations making our life simply more “convenient” is a huge understatement. While they have made life more convenient, you can not deny the mp3 player, smart phone, etc., have not changed this world. Judging by your name you belong either in the kitchen or TSM wall, so I’ll excuse you just this once.
To everyone who lost someone to cancer, I’m sorry for your loss. I am very fortunate as only my grandpa has had cancer (prostate cancer), and he hazed it like a pledge until it quit pledgeship.
Actually, he created none of those things. I had an MP3 player long before I had an iPod, and the Tablet was made longgg before the iPad. He just had amazing marketing and a bunch of hipsters and sorority women to buy his products.
May he R.I.P. though. He was a genius.
yes but he redefined all those products. The tablet and mp3 players apple created compared to what they were before is like comparing a flat screen lcd to a black and white tv of the 60’s. maybe a color tv from the 80’s.
He marketed them, he didn’t make them himself. Foreign laborers built designs of engineers employed by Apple. The only thing Jobs did was help create the wheel on the ipod.
You all are fucking retarded if you think he didn’t change the world. For example, iTunes changed the music industry completely. He has over 300 patents on inventions he invented or co-invented. Before the iPhone, cell phones could not do hardly anything. He is one of the greatest innovators ever.
RIP Steve Jobs, One of the finest American Business icons ever.
14 years ago at 8:11 pmWell played sir, well played.
14 years ago at 8:18 pmAgreed. He bought Pixar for $10 million and sold it for $7 billion. He returned to Apple and built it into one of the most successful companies in the world, with more cash in reserve than the US Treasury. It all started in his garage. Total American Dream Move.

14 years ago at 1:35 amSputhernTradition,
I wish I’d read your response sooner…that’s exactly what I was going for, but I’m a few drinks deep. That’s not meant to be an “ooh look at me” either…that’s just meant to explain that you said what I wanted to say.
14 years ago at 1:49 amYou mad, bro?
14 years ago at 6:41 amJust a correction: He DROPPED out of Reed college after a semester.
14 years ago at 6:54 amBrohab, you strike me as one of those assholes that wears pastel shorts, button ups, and sperrys just because TFM deemed it frat.
14 years ago at 9:34 amSounds like some people just can’t handle the freedom of the internet.
14 years ago at 9:51 amas another hoosier by defination, yet a boilermaker by blood. go fuck yourself hoosierfrat43. your stupidity directly reflects your education in the shithole that is bloomington indiana. jobs did great things for cancer research and ive lost loved ones to cancer. so it doesnt matter where he went to school or what house he was in. in my heart he will always be frat as fuck. TFM (unlike your gay ass)
14 years ago at 10:36 pmTurtlenecks. NF
14 years ago at 8:17 pmCollege dropout. NF
14 years ago at 8:21 pmAgreed entirely, though the TFTC attitude of turtlenecks in the face of detractors was nonetheless, well, TFTC.
14 years ago at 8:21 pmSterling Archer?
14 years ago at 8:25 pmTurtlenecks. NF. Dropping out of college. NF. Making more than any of us will, and being defined as a business legend. TFM.. He has my respect
14 years ago at 8:30 pmTurtlenecks, NF. Tactalnecks, TFM.
14 years ago at 8:30 pmThe word “cuz” and complete lack of grammar. NF. His turtlenecks probably cost more than your tuition and it’s still considered pocket change to him. That, my friend, is FaF.
14 years ago at 8:37 pmTactalnecks are definitely FaF. As is Sterling Archer. “And now I’m down a… slightly darker black one.”
14 years ago at 8:48 pmBeing TFTC about getting a college degree while making one of the world’s most powerful companies and becoming an American business icon. FaF.
14 years ago at 8:55 pmHe dropped out of college because he decided it wasn’t worth his time and he ended up making billions anyway. If that’s not TFTC idk what is
14 years ago at 10:04 pmSterling Archer, FaF
14 years ago at 11:15 am“Fuck your dolphin Pam!”
14 years ago at 11:25 amCollege dropout. NF. Having colleges line up to give you degrees. FAF.
14 years ago at 11:40 amI think Steve Jobs would be happy to know that I found out about his death on my iPhone.
14 years ago at 8:22 pmnice
14 years ago at 8:24 pmSame here. I stood up in the middle of senate meeting and announced it. Even motioned for a moment of silence.
14 years ago at 8:42 pma moment of silence, could you be more dramatic?
14 years ago at 8:46 pmHe could have subtly cried until everyone noticed and asked what the problem was.
14 years ago at 9:30 pmI found out about his death on my Mac.
14 years ago at 9:41 pmThere’s an app for that.
14 years ago at 11:23 pm^ Well Played
14 years ago at 1:51 amI found out he died from PC on my tablet running Android.
14 years ago at 6:27 am^That’s suprising, I imagined you would find out by checking your beeper hidden in your designer cargo shorts
14 years ago at 9:13 amI laughed ^
14 years ago at 11:16 amWhile im not an apple fan, the man was an innovator, and changed the world. Rest in Peace sir, you’ve done your job.
14 years ago at 8:28 pm^punny.
14 years ago at 8:32 pmdidnt intend for that, but whatever, it works
14 years ago at 7:13 amyall want some motivation, listen to Jobs’ Stanford commencement speech. Shit is legit.
14 years ago at 8:29 pmVery true, the man is inspirational to those of us who seek jobs in business.
14 years ago at 8:41 pmHis speech was absolutely amazing. “Death is a destination we all share… It clears out the old to make change for the new.” Well said sir, well said. You will be missed.
14 years ago at 9:05 pmWhether you liked him or not, he changed the world. He created the personal computer, smart phone as we know it, the mp3 player as we know it, and the tablet industry.
14 years ago at 8:33 pmR.I.P.
14 years ago at 10:26 pmThat being said, having lost an uncle to adrenal cancer earlier this year, my heart goes out to his family and loved ones in their time of grief.
14 years ago at 12:02 amActually, he created none of those things. I had an MP3 player long before I had an iPod, and the Tablet was made longgg before the iPad. He just had amazing marketing and a bunch of hipsters and sorority women to buy his products.
May he R.I.P. though. He was a genius.
http://pics.blameitonthevoices.com/012010/ipad_vs_hp_tc_1100.jpg
14 years ago at 5:36 amyes but he redefined all those products. The tablet and mp3 players apple created compared to what they were before is like comparing a flat screen lcd to a black and white tv of the 60’s. maybe a color tv from the 80’s.
14 years ago at 9:52 amHe marketed them, he didn’t make them himself. Foreign laborers built designs of engineers employed by Apple. The only thing Jobs did was help create the wheel on the ipod.
14 years ago at 10:22 amYou all are fucking retarded if you think he didn’t change the world. For example, iTunes changed the music industry completely. He has over 300 patents on inventions he invented or co-invented. Before the iPhone, cell phones could not do hardly anything. He is one of the greatest innovators ever.
14 years ago at 11:38 amScott Forstall and Greg Christie invented iOS and designed the hardware. He was just the CEO
14 years ago at 12:02 amWell, no one’s attacked you for being from Alaska yet, so… They make igloos with wall plugs now?
14 years ago at 8:41 pm“Dude check this out, our frat castle is made of SNOW!”
14 years ago at 8:44 pm“Dude check this out, we have a fratgloo!”
14 years ago at 8:47 pm^Can everyone just take your laps now please.
14 years ago at 8:56 pm^This fucking guy.
14 years ago at 10:46 pmThe whole “laps” thing gets used way too much on here. I think that has become the singlemost annoying thing about this site.
14 years ago at 12:13 am^ Take a lap.
14 years ago at 1:26 amI only clicked on the comments to see if anyone would. Random as fuck, i don’t know of many universities up there and I was born there (moved in 01).
