Well, he was a B17 pilot in WWII in the European theater, but he was almost shipped to the Pacific to fly B29s. His first job was carrying stacks of papers at a post office when he was four years old. Entered the service one month after Pearl Harbor was attacked (the month he turned eighteen), and then went to war after several months of flight training. He flew 35 bombing missions. Smoked cigarettes, cigars, and pipes for over 50 years, and is still alive to this day.

Haha, oh yeah. Every day it makes me proud to know that this man’s blood runs through my veins. Everything I just said is true, and it still surprises me. I got a shitload of his stories about the shit which went down in the sky over Germany.

Yes sir. You’re not the first to tell me that. See, it was only last year that I started asking about his war stories. He told me several, and when I heard them I really was shocked. These are all stories from 20,000 feet in the air, too. Some of the things he told me were almost exact lyrics from “Aces High” by Iron Maiden. He actually started crying during this one story of his.

The Capt. is 100% correct. I’ve already lost both of mine and wish i could go back and juts listen to stories and advice they had instead of being a know-it-all teenager. A frat on from me as well.

A few days ago, January 2nd, was his 88th birthday. I called him to wish him a happy birthday, but he kept thinking I was my dad. Ah well. He’s had the life. I don’t need to give him shit about being hard of hearing/bad memory. I’d be glad to share a few of his war stories with you all, but I have a feeling some of you on this site don’t care, haha.

God bless your grandfather. Please thank him on my behalf for serving this great nation and allowing us to have the freedoms that we enjoy everyday. Both of my grandfather’s served. one in the army during the 50’s in germany and the other 59-80. serving in libya and thailand along with various posts around the United States. He was actually the chief mechanic on Capt. Ritchie’s F-4 in vietnam
