Germans actually have organizations similar to fraternities called “Studentenverbindung”. This is an excerpt from Wikipedia regarding current controversy of these organizations: “There are numerous points of critique which are usually discussed without result. The most common include accusations of nationalism, racism, sexism and elitism.” Sounds fratty to me.
Studentenverbindung are basically like the incredibly exclusive school-specific fraternities like Skull and Bones. Most of Germany’s biggest political and business figures in the last several hundred years have been members, and I think the first ones began their existence in the 1400s. They were the precursor organizations for British secret societies at Oxford and Cambridge. England modeled a lot of their higher education system on the enlightenment-era Germany model.
So, in part, we owe part of the traditions that set the foundation for our organizations to these earlier brotherhoods.
