If you’re good you only need a driver, a wood, 5, 7, 9, a wedge and putter. However, I have probably used all of these on the same hole before.

No way!? An 8 handicap?!? Man, you are an amazing golfer. I hope you enjoy shooting in the 80s.

If you don’t keep a 60 degree in the tool box then you’re a damn fool. Short side pin location on the wrong side of the sand trap? Good luck with a simple P wedge I’m sure it will stay within 20 feet.

You can easily use a 56 or a 54 and accomplish the same feat. Depends on how much you want it to roll

i’d probably agree a year ago but not now. they used to be called ‘rescue’ clubs but now most call them ‘utility’ clubs for good reason. they’ve also become more generally accepted by the pro’s now. i had replaced my 5 wood with a mizuno 17′ first (TT S300) and then a 910H 19′. used them off the tees, off the grass (has a bit higher flight and softer landing on the greens), and even replacing the wedge when i’m just off the green. there is a difference in being a luddite or being someone who thinks even Old Tom, who was an innovator, would approve.

Actually knowing how to hit long irons is crucial. Sometimes a 2 iron works much more magic then a 3 wood on some holes.
