Yeah, maybe if they are out in the field or in an informal setting. Even then it would only be within one or two levels of their chain of command. However, only a total fucking idiot would go before a group of senior officers in a formal setting.
I’m sitting in my office in uniform right now (reading TFM on your tax dollars) with a lip in. I do Bde CUB calls all the time with a spitter in front of me. Last time a general officer flew in here he asked me for a dip, then went to the bar with us at the end of the day. I doubt I’d whip one out in a formal pentagon conference room, but I’ve had one in briefing governors and senators before. It’s really not a big deal. I did assume contractor though when I read this. Why this kid even knows this I don’t know.
I can say from experience that dip is something most of the males in the Army do but we would NEVER have a dip in and talk to a general or some other big whig. Which would lead me to believe that his dad is probably a contractor or he works for the Agency.
I’m pretty sure that officers, especially field grade, all have mutual understandings of professionalism. If the men who ran this country judged each other in that fashion, then we wouldn’t be who we are as a nation. If the men who run this country are worried about whether someone has a lip in or not, then we would all be under a different flag.
