A Message To The World From An Anonymous Fraternity Member At The University Of Oklahoma

8db764fb354abe1d08526c64aec3dafc

The events of this past week have hit the OU community hard, especially us Greeks. We were shocked and appalled by the actions of SAE, just like everyone else. Almost as shocking as the video, however, has been the reaction. Yes, the chant clearly indicated that things need to change, particularly with the chapter involved, but all Greeks are now being treated as guilty by association. Guilty until proven innocent. Racist until proven otherwise.

The media has done an incredible job reporting on the events at OU over the past few days, but, unfortunately, there is one important aspect of the story that is not receiving coverage: the effects of this week on the Greek community.

Just one day before the video came out, OU students, mostly Greek, raised $561,268.15 for the Children’s Miracle Network. This was the type of thing we were known for, but nine seconds changed everything. In a matter of seconds, a few people’s actions on a bus, however horrific, tarnished the reputation of an entire fraternity and the Greek community as a whole. It’s ridiculous to think that the actions of a few members, of what was the most exclusive fraternity on campus, now seemingly represent everyone.

Now we live in constant fear. Every time we step foot outside, we are subject to ridicule and judgment. We have been threatened with violence, and violence has occurred. Every day we are under attack.

Cars with letters are vandalized, people are jumping Greeks, houses are being vandalized, and cyber attacks on Greeks and their organizations have taken place as well. OU is our home, and we are no longer comfortable here. In our own homes, we do not feel safe. You shouldn’t be afraid to walk to class alone due to the actions of a few bad eggs simply because you may be a member of a Greek organization. We are no longer trusted by our fellow students. Dirty looks are shot our way as we walk campus. We are treated like we are all bigots.

SAE has been vandalized and attacked, but other fraternities are suffering for their actions as well. Sig Ep has received the brunt of these attacks, as they were SAE’s neighbors, and they have similar letters. Their house, members, and cars have all been attacked by people who thought they were attacking SAE. This is a completely different and completely innocent fraternity we’re talking about. Those guys did nothing; they aren’t bigots, yet they are being treated like bigots. Every fraternity on campus is now subject to the general sentiment that we are all evil racists.

Worst of all, there’s no real way to reach out and change that perception. At least not yet. We are left to sit and watch as the media and popular opinion turns on us more and more by the day.

Sororities have also suffered in the wake of the now infamous video. One sorority’s headquarters suspended several members due to an Instagram post from last year that featured girls wearing rap t-shirts on MLK day. The girl from the first chanting video, who can clearly be seen not participating, is a member of another sorority. Several of her sisters have been harassed by protestors, simply because a girl from their sorority was there. Tri Delt has suffered the most out of any sorority. A Tri Delt recorded the first chanting video, and, as a result, Tri Delt has been under investigation for their involvement. For exposing the video, a girl’s entire sorority is being treated like they chanted along with SAE. Tri Delts are encouraged not to walk alone, or use the front door of their own house, due to fear of attacks. Sororities are being harassed on campus just as much as fraternities.

The school as a whole has even come under physical attack. Sunday night, around 3:30am, the power grid for the dorms was taken down. For several hours, thousands of freshmen students were literally in the dark. The only information the police would give us was that we needed to lock ourselves in our rooms and stay in groups.

Safety is a genuine concern for Greeks on campus. Police protection is required, not just for SAEs, but for the community as a whole. More police than ever are patrolling around Greek housing. People are afraid to walk alone at night on what used to be some of the nicest streets in Norman. My fraternity has taken measures to ensure the safety of our members, holdovers, and candidates. We are not permitted to wear letters for fear of being targeted. We are heavily encouraged not to speak to the media. We have also been encouraged to take the letters off of our cars, to remove letters from Twitter or Instagram bios, and to speak only in private Facebook/GroupMe groups.

People are afraid, and we as a community have come closer together than ever before, but we do not have a voice.

We are not bigots; those people are gone. We stand by and alongside people of every race. We are not the bad guys; we have become victims of the chant just like everyone else. It is my hope that one day OU Greeks will once again be known for raising money for charity, having exceptional grades, and respecting everyone equally.

It’s fucked up that Sig Ep is getting assaulted just because their letters are similar. Most Sig Eps I know are really balanced, non-bigoted guys.

The SigEp here actually holds a concert to raise money that is open to anyone in the community, not just Greeks

I’m a SigEp from a different Campus and we are the only fraternity here to ever have a black president and we currently have one yet we have been called racist here as well.

Is this 100% accurate to the situation here in norman. As another Greek student from OU the behavior of non-Greek students has been appalling. Before this event our greek system was highly praised for our campus involvement, philanthropy, and academic excellence. Despite what the media claims, there wasn’t a divide between Greeks and non-Greeks. We coexisted and created a fantastic student environment that everyone could come together and be proud of. The fact that my car was vandalized for having greek letters is fucking ridiculous, but that’s not being reported because how dare the media portray Greeks as victims. Fuck this whole situation. And fuck the media. This is bullshit

Agree with everything you said. Except the divide definitely does exist, people walking around without letters on their shirt are looked at and treated differently. That is the undeniable culture of OU.

Yes there is a divide that is true, but not any more than at any other school where greek life is prominent. Especially not to the extent the media wants people to believe.

I would say there’s less of a gap at some other schools depending on the region of the country. Regardless, you’re right, the media is so good at twisting this into something completely different than what it really is.

Just from of the incidents that are raised in this article, there seems to be some built up tensions. I am starting to sense that things have just kinda boiled over. Perhaps the people just are fed up with all the Greeks. Is that a possibility?

The author mentioned the MLK incident. Then comes SAE and those sorority members that were also on the bus. That seems like a lot. I think SAE as a whole is legit and took the right action. Maybe it’s time for other organizations to run an audit to see if there is a problem with their OU chapters.

Some PR might also be helpful.

I am an outsider from Michigan. It appears that the President of the university has over reacted. He definitely did not consider the University’s infrastructure before responding to the video. It appears that he has put innocent students, including the whole Greek System there in harms way. It seems to me, that if a racist culture does actually exist, he could have used this incident to change it in a positive way. This reaction appears to be opening old wounds and creating a divide that need not have happened. No one condones the racist chant of these foolish, drunk college kids. Stomping all over the First Amendment and other legal framework is not the right message to send either. This is 2015 and we live in a colorless society.

Our president was not the problem, he acted accordingly and accurately. The reason that greek students are being attacked is because of how liberal media is portraying greek life and lying about how we conduct our selves. These lies are inspiring idiots to act without thinking and that is the problem. As far as SAE, they were on their last chance already and deserved to be kicked off campus. Racism has no place here.

It’s sad that it has reached the point where I’m actually looking forward to the next big scandal that the media and an uninformed public will latch onto.

The war on Greek Life continues. In modern American society, it isn’t acceptable to be exclusionary, because everyone is supposed to be a winner. The concept that some win more than others is “un-American” now. This attitude is dangerous, but since we as Greeks are the quintessence of this notion, we will by subjected to more and more ferocious attacks as time progresses.

As I said in amother post… what happens to the OU President now that he has helped create a hostile learning environment for all Greeks? And of the school newspaper editors that have helped to propogate this?

Let’s be honest, Greeks are never known for charity and grades outside of the greek system. This is just more fuel to the fire for media and non greeks. Feel bad for those not involved.

As an SAE this breaks my heart, I’m in California as one of the more diverse chapters and are being accused of racists. The actions of few are weighing heavily on us. People who have no idea about what we have done for fundraising and philanthropy; incredibly frustrating.

Their rebuttal to our philanthropy and the money we raise is “a lot of people raise money, you’re nothing special” like because the money we raise for charity is tainted. While they are in fact correct that a lot of people raise money for charity, nobody raises as much as we do in our amount of time. It sucks being the best because so many people want you to fail every slip up is blown out of proportion to tarnish our reputation as academics, gentleman, and philanthropists.

I’m man enough to say I stereotype. Just like when this first broke I said Oklahoma is a horrible place. I don’t actually mean it its just a hyperbole. I genuinely feel for every fraternity and sorority at OU right now. It’s a shame that in this day and age people are so ignorant to assume that just because you wear letters you’re a racist. And this hostility towards the sororities is completely unacceptable. No violence should ever be levied upon a woman. You all are in my prayers and I hope this blows over for you guys and girls so you can once again feel safe at your homes and the university you know and love.
