"American Sniper" Almost Included Chris Kyle's Death Scene

“American Sniper” was hands down one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It painted Chris Kyle as a true American hero, which is exactly what he deserves to be portrayed as, since Kyle sacrificed his life in order to protect the lives of his own brothers in combat. Kyle also, after seeking help for his own PTSD problems, sought to help other soldiers cope with their problems.

Unfortunately, on February 2, 2013, Kyle and a companion, Chad Littlefield, took Eddie Ray Routh out to a shooting range in Erath County, just southwest of Fort Worth. While at the range, Routh opened fire on Kyle and Littlefield, killing them both. It was a tragic ending to both Kyle’s and Littlefield’s lives. It was an ending that Taya Kyle did not want to be included in the movie.

From New York Daily News:

Screenwriter Jason Hall told the Daily News that Kyle’s wife, Taya, asked Bradley Cooper, who played her husband in the film, director Clint Eastwood and other executives not to include the moment in their take on the story.

“Five days after Chris was murdered, (Taya) called and said, ‘This is going to be how my children remember their father, so I want you to get right,’” Hall said.

Screenwriters did their best to get it right and still include a scene of his murder. Thankfully, for both Taya and the rest of the world, they decided that, ultimately, it would be best to cut that scene from the movie.

“In the end, I think we felt that this was a film about Chris’ life and not about his death,” Hall said. “We also wanted to be careful not to glorify the guy who did it.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Hall. You guys did one hell of a job depicting Chris’s life, and how the movie ended couldn’t have been any more appropriate. There aren’t many movies that I have ever seen with a crowd so silent at the end. Good on the crew for not glorifying Routh and cutting the scene.

I think the main reason was legal considerations. They couldn’t show the scene without compromising the prosecution.

I couldn’t handle that. The funeral escort was the toughest scene I’ve ever had to watch in a movie.

Not sure what was tougher between the end of that movie and the credits of Lone Survivor

it’s funny you mention lone survivor because him and the American sniper started in the same class during seal training but got separated due to Chris getting injured but they still stayed friends .

Marcus Lutrrell classed up in 226 and graduated 228.
Chris Kyle classed up 231 and graduated 233.

Obviously, reading a news article about the book is not the same as reading the book, jackass.

Chris Kyle was injured and had to graduate with a later buds class. They were in the same class to start out with.

Marcus Luttrell was an asshole who made up half his story, and the parts that were true were grossly exaggerated. I wouldn’t want to be friends with him.

So you’re saying because I didn’t like the movie I’m a Commie? Film is subjective ass-hole. Just because I didn’t like the movie doesn’t mean I don’t support the troops or the US I love such movies as the Hurt Locker and Black Hawk Don. What you just said is not better than the whiney left-wingers who say people who don’t like 12 Years a Slave are racist. Just because someone doesn’t like a movie doesn’t mean they don’t support what it portrays. If you didn’t like 12 years I’m sure that doesn’t mean you want slavery back.

Calling you a commie is in reference to liberals. Because the whiny far left have the same ideology as communists. And liberals tend to have less respect for our men and women in uniform. Take for instance Vietnam, liberals were spitting on our troops and calling them baby killers. That’s why I called you a commie.

Yes but he did just explain how not liking American Sniper doesn’t mean he doesn’t support the troops. Jimmy here has been an idiot all day but I he (for once) makes a fair point here.

It was one of the best movies of the year. It was a great tribute to a fallen hero.

Was it completely accurate? No. But most movies based on true stories are not. Selma is another recent movie (also one of the best of the year) that has taken some heat for its inaccurate portrayal of LBJ. But I don’t go to the movies for a history lesson, I go to be entertained and possibly moved, as was the case with both films. If you want history lesson you should probably go watch a fucking documentary

I think it would have been too much. That last scene of the wife staring into his eyes was very powerful in its own right

I don’t think death scenes should be in non fictional movies. It would be a little disrespectful and very hard to swallow for viewers. Hell I couldn’t even stand it when Marley died, so I’m glad they didn’t include Kyle’s death

Agreed. If you can’t appreciate a cute puppy you’re going straight to hell. Likewise, but to a much higher magnitude, Mr Kyle’s life deserves to be appreciated.

I’ve never seen my dad ,a Cobra pilot in Vietnam, cry except three times the end of We Were Soldiers, the end of Black Hawk Down, and the funeral procession at the end of American Sniper.
