“American Sniper” Almost Included Chris Kyle’s Death Scene
“American Sniper” was hands down one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It painted Chris Kyle as a true American hero, which is exactly what he deserves to be portrayed as, since Kyle sacrificed his life in order to protect the lives of his own brothers in combat. Kyle also, after seeking help for his own PTSD problems, sought to help other soldiers cope with their problems.
Unfortunately, on February 2, 2013, Kyle and a companion, Chad Littlefield, took Eddie Ray Routh out to a shooting range in Erath County, just southwest of Fort Worth. While at the range, Routh opened fire on Kyle and Littlefield, killing them both. It was a tragic ending to both Kyle’s and Littlefield’s lives. It was an ending that Taya Kyle did not want to be included in the movie.
From New York Daily News:
Screenwriter Jason Hall told the Daily News that Kyle’s wife, Taya, asked Bradley Cooper, who played her husband in the film, director Clint Eastwood and other executives not to include the moment in their take on the story.
“Five days after Chris was murdered, (Taya) called and said, ‘This is going to be how my children remember their father, so I want you to get right,’” Hall said.
Screenwriters did their best to get it right and still include a scene of his murder. Thankfully, for both Taya and the rest of the world, they decided that, ultimately, it would be best to cut that scene from the movie.
“In the end, I think we felt that this was a film about Chris’ life and not about his death,” Hall said. “We also wanted to be careful not to glorify the guy who did it.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself, Hall. You guys did one hell of a job depicting Chris’s life, and how the movie ended couldn’t have been any more appropriate. There aren’t many movies that I have ever seen with a crowd so silent at the end. Good on the crew for not glorifying Routh and cutting the scene..

I think the main reason was legal considerations. They couldn’t show the scene without compromising the prosecution.
10 years ago at 11:12 amDon’t waste you money on law school apps, champ.
10 years ago at 12:21 pmGod bless Chris Kyle and may be rest in peace.
10 years ago at 11:15 amI couldn’t handle that. The funeral escort was the toughest scene I’ve ever had to watch in a movie.
10 years ago at 11:16 amWhat about the time King Kong fell off the Empire State Building?
10 years ago at 11:51 amGet out if here
10 years ago at 11:59 amOf*
10 years ago at 12:03 pmCongratulations you graduated first grade. I clearly meant of. It’s called a typo they happen all the time, twat.
10 years ago at 12:12 pmTrying to come up with a clever way to say it but the comment is so disrespectful all I can think of is fuck off you un-patriotic prick. Rest in peace Chris Kyle
10 years ago at 12:09 pmKing Kong is an American hero!
10 years ago at 12:14 pmHe’s a giant fictitious gorilla, that isn’t from America. Fuck you
10 years ago at 12:16 pmYes but America discovered him you worthless twat. King Kong completely changed American culture. He’s a figure created long ago and is still thriving today.
10 years ago at 12:36 pmBlackball this guy.
10 years ago at 12:40 pmI second this motion
10 years ago at 12:58 pmHe never took a citizenship test so hes still a fucking illegal to me. Also, you know, he wasn’t real. Please go home you disrespectful shit.
10 years ago at 1:06 pmSo is Obama
10 years ago at 2:18 pmFigures you would be “Obamas White Daddy” with a stupid ass comment like that.
10 years ago at 4:55 pmI agree. Tears were shed…. Man tears.
10 years ago at 11:54 amNot sure what was tougher between the end of that movie and the credits of Lone Survivor
10 years ago at 11:33 amit’s funny you mention lone survivor because him and the American sniper started in the same class during seal training but got separated due to Chris getting injured but they still stayed friends .
10 years ago at 11:57 amThey were at least a year apart, bud.
10 years ago at 1:10 pmObviously you didn’t read the book. Jackass.
10 years ago at 1:56 pmMarcus Lutrrell classed up in 226 and graduated 228.
Chris Kyle classed up 231 and graduated 233.
Obviously, reading a news article about the book is not the same as reading the book, jackass.
10 years ago at 2:09 pmChris Kyle was injured and had to graduate with a later buds class. They were in the same class to start out with.
10 years ago at 5:56 pmMarcus Luttrell was an asshole who made up half his story, and the parts that were true were grossly exaggerated. I wouldn’t want to be friends with him.
10 years ago at 8:35 pmWhere is my stuffed teddy bear?
10 years ago at 11:35 amThat was to signify that American Sniper was a bad movie.
10 years ago at 11:52 amGo fuck your self you commie bastard
10 years ago at 12:01 pmSo you’re saying because I didn’t like the movie I’m a Commie? Film is subjective ass-hole. Just because I didn’t like the movie doesn’t mean I don’t support the troops or the US I love such movies as the Hurt Locker and Black Hawk Don. What you just said is not better than the whiney left-wingers who say people who don’t like 12 Years a Slave are racist. Just because someone doesn’t like a movie doesn’t mean they don’t support what it portrays. If you didn’t like 12 years I’m sure that doesn’t mean you want slavery back.
10 years ago at 12:20 pmI for one loved seeing him take out those 9/11 bastards.
10 years ago at 12:21 pmCalling you a commie is in reference to liberals. Because the whiny far left have the same ideology as communists. And liberals tend to have less respect for our men and women in uniform. Take for instance Vietnam, liberals were spitting on our troops and calling them baby killers. That’s why I called you a commie.
10 years ago at 12:29 pmYes but he did just explain how not liking American Sniper doesn’t mean he doesn’t support the troops. Jimmy here has been an idiot all day but I he (for once) makes a fair point here.
10 years ago at 12:55 pmthink*
10 years ago at 12:56 pmIraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks.
10 years ago at 1:55 pmThanks for answering your own joke Buff. None of us laughed or understood it anyway.
10 years ago at 12:02 pmIt was one of the best movies of the year. It was a great tribute to a fallen hero.
10 years ago at 12:05 pmIt was a bunck of lies about a guy who was fucking crazy.
10 years ago at 12:07 pmWas it completely accurate? No. But most movies based on true stories are not. Selma is another recent movie (also one of the best of the year) that has taken some heat for its inaccurate portrayal of LBJ. But I don’t go to the movies for a history lesson, I go to be entertained and possibly moved, as was the case with both films. If you want history lesson you should probably go watch a fucking documentary
10 years ago at 12:13 pmI think it would have been too much. That last scene of the wife staring into his eyes was very powerful in its own right
10 years ago at 11:54 amI don’t think death scenes should be in non fictional movies. It would be a little disrespectful and very hard to swallow for viewers. Hell I couldn’t even stand it when Marley died, so I’m glad they didn’t include Kyle’s death
10 years ago at 11:55 amAgreed. If you can’t appreciate a cute puppy you’re going straight to hell. Likewise, but to a much higher magnitude, Mr Kyle’s life deserves to be appreciated.
10 years ago at 12:01 pm9/11 was an inside job
10 years ago at 12:02 pmBall people like this, even though he’s just a rushee there’s a precedent set that shit like this is alright to post with no repercussions.
10 years ago at 12:11 pmDon’t even acknowledge him. He’s looking for a reaction and nothing pisses them off more being ignored.
10 years ago at 12:21 pmI don’t care what you’re opinion of Bush Jr. and his administration is on other topics. If you honestly believe 9/11 was an inside job you’re a fucking moron.
10 years ago at 1:04 pmHOOYA!
10 years ago at 12:47 pmI’ve never seen my dad ,a Cobra pilot in Vietnam, cry except three times the end of We Were Soldiers, the end of Black Hawk Down, and the funeral procession at the end of American Sniper.
