American Wins Boston Marathon For First Time Since 1983

The Boston Marathon: a truly great American event. Unfortunately, an American has not won the marathon since 1983. (Fucking 1983!) The winners since then have mostly been from Africa–you know, the lanky Kenyan types who can run like the wind, seemingly forever. In fact, the guy who took second this year was from Kenya.

Finally, though, the American winless streak ended. Meb Keflezighi of San Diego won the 2014 Boston Marathon, 11 seconds ahead of Wilson Chebet. Keflezighi is no stranger to winning, and he has acquired a pretty incredible résumé over the years, including New York City Marathon champion and Olympic medalist. Pretty damn impressive. I’m impressed people even finish these things, let alone blaze through them. Most of you would probably pass out after the fourth mile. God knows I would. Keflezighi ran the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay on Monday in two hours, eight minutes, and 37 seconds. Congratulations, sir.

Just a year after the Boston bombings, Keflezighi showed the world America can never be knocked down. America might get hit and bruised, but never knocked out.

Let’s be honest, most of us would not make it to the fourth mile. With that being said, this is a damn proud moment to be an American. Congrats, Mr. Keflezighi. You are truly a great American.

To be fair he emigrated from the east African nation of Eritrea when he was 12, but at least he’s a citizen.

What does that have to do with anything? This country was built by immigrants.

This country is 237 years old, in terms of human history that’s pretty short.

Also, he put each of the victims names from the bombings last year in each corner of his race bib in an attempt to honor them. TFM.
