Another “Border Patrol” Tee Shirt, Another Fraternity Under Fire

It seems like there should be a template for this story, because it is becoming all too common for fraternities to take heat over a theme that has already lost all of its comedic value. This week’s victim is Kappa Alpha at Randolph Macon College, who will likely face disciplinary action from the administration after “Border Patrol” t-shirts made the local news. Per Richmond, Virginia’s NBC affiliate:

Administrators at Randolph-Macon College are investigating several students and groups who reportedly held and attended a “USA versus Mexico” party this past weekend after photos surfaced showing students dressed like “illegal immigrants” and “border control agents.”

Can we not do this theme anymore? Obviously, it is going to piss people off and obviously the fraternity is going to get in trouble. I never understood why people would get so offended when others would wear sombreros to a party, but it’s shit like this that makes any kind of Mexican theme essentially a non-starter. It’s not even that funny. Worse, small private schools like Randolph-Macon hate negative attention, so they are absolutely going to make KA an example.

The college released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:

Randolph-Macon College does not tolerate any type of discriminatory behavior. The college finds this type of conduct reprehensible and in direct conflict with our values. We are in the process of holding the individuals and groups involved responsible through our judicial process.

It’s just not worth it. Get rid of these dumb themes so that we can enjoy margaritas at date parties without feeling like assholes.
