Arizona SAE And AEPi Team Up For Community Service

Hey look! News about fraternities doing good stuff! Last weekend, SAE and AEPi at the University of Arizona teamed up, beared down (puns), and helped clean up the Islamic Center of Tucson that’s located near campus.

Lior Schinagel, President of AEPi, said it marked the beginning of a partnership between the two chapters.

“We hope to serve as an exemplary force for the greek community and aim to spread the partnership to all organizations that are interested in contributing,” he said.

The community service project more or less aimed to clean up debris and trash around the center to give children a safe place to play. Schinagel also said they chose the Islamic Center intentionally based on the negative connotation some students associate with the facility.

“That’s something that we as fraternities can relate to,” Schinagel said. “We always get labeled by the actions of the few, so we found this as an opportunity to kind of reverse the roles, where the actions of a few of us paint a much better picture for the larger student community to the Islamic Center and, by extension, to the Tucson community.”

The actions of a few Greeks giving a bad rep to the rest of us? No way! However, maybe, perhaps, and I may be going out of my journalistic bounds here by saying this, Lior was referring to the AEPi-SAE altercation last semester? Eh, you never know.

Again, just throwing this out there, but is it far-fetched to think this community service project was Office of Greek Life mandated in order to set aside differences between the chapters? Seems like a very Office of Greek Life thing to do. Also not out of the question is that the chapters did it on their own accord, which would obviously be ideal.

Regardless, Greeks doing things to help the community whether, they want to or not, is a good thing. I mean, we do like to pride ourselves on being some of the most philanthropic organizations in the nation.

This is great. In the midst of racial tension and Greek organizations, we see chapters helping a Islamic Center. The only thing I see Making head line news is the ALTERCATION last semester. Not this act of good deeds even though I MAY have been ordered to do so.

It’s great this is happening, but let’s not kid ourselves–this is only part of the reason we join fraternities. We also do it to have a great time and build memories we’ll have for the rest of our lives. Those don’t always have to be drinking and getting fucked up, but they don’t always happen doing philanthropy. There’s a balance, and that’s what we’re fantastic at doing. Being balanced.
