Awesome College Student Defends Being Wealthy
In the typical college culture, being a member of fraternity or sorority is usually associated with the “over-privileged” stigma. We accept it; some even take pride in being affiliated with the socially and financially elite. Because, you know, why wouldn’t you? Nothing grinds a GDI’s gears more than basking in the “overindulging perspective” of which he was trying to shame you.
Katie Menendez, a writer at Thought Catalog, was fed up with the “blame the rich for being rich” bullshit and lashed out at those who constantly bitch about other people’s money.
“I’m tired of justifying my address and the backlash I receive when I tell people I am a student and live in a high-rise apartment. I’m tired of the looks my doorman gives me when he hands me my package (of work clothes) delivered from J.Crew.
So stop making me feel like I’ve done something wrong. Stop making me feel like I am less deserving. I didn’t ask to be born into this kind of circumstance and I’m tired of being judged for it.”
If you are feeling particularly masochistic, go read the comments. Here are some examples from GDIs complaining about her piece:
“BOO HOO I’M RICH”
“Sounds like you need to grow up and realize that the world doesn’t revolve around you.”
“You should use your privilege to make the world a better place for those without your privilege, instead of being upset over what you *perceive* as other people thinking about you all of the time.”
I’m not even hand picking these responses, they are literally three in a row out of hundreds of hateful comments. If you want change the perception of wealthy Americans, then become a wealthy American. If not, then get off their backs.

greed is good.
12 years ago at 4:12 pmEconomics is not a zero sum game. That girl’s family is not rich because other people are poor. The Leftists always like to talk about a, “piece of the pie.” That’s such a bullshit analogy because it gives the impression that the pie, i.e. wealth, is limited. However, the potential to create wealth is unlimited. If you didn’t come from old money, stop your pity party and make sure the old money starts with you. That’s my plan. And if it doesn’t work out, I’ll only have myself to blame.
12 years ago at 10:45 pmYES. I am so tired of the “privileged” card. Barack Obama’s class warfare is getting out of hand. People should never feel punished for success.
12 years ago at 12:17 am“If you want change the perception of wealthy Americans, then become a wealthy American. If not, then get off their backs.” One of the greatest things I have ever read. Describes everything that is wrong with this country. Its called capitalism, deal with it.

12 years ago at 12:01 pmI grew up lower middle class in an upper class town, don’t ask me how we made it but we’re still there. Kids first cars are Bimmers, BMW’s shit like that, I got my moms hand me down 2004 Mitsubishi Galant i drove for 2 years, worked in a grocery store until i graduated high school. Relying on a shit ton of financial aid to get me through school. I don’t judge the rich unless they act pretentious as fuck and give me a reason to judge them, and i don’t judge the poor unless they were careless and made themselves poor. No ones more deserving than the next person.

12 years ago at 2:55 pmI didn’t grow up wealthy. My dad owned his own business and everything he made went right back into growing the company and mine and my siblings’ college funds. But last year my dad sold off his company and became a legit multimillionaire. I never bring it up, but those who do know think I’m somehow spoiled because of it.
A GDI called me “over privileged” because I’m in a fraternity and drive a BMW. Little does she know I’m putting myself through college on a full ride academic scholarship. And that BMW? I worked through high school, saved my money and bought it broken down for a few grand. I put countless hours into rebuilding that car’s engine myself. And she drives a new Civic her parents bought her. Who’s the real spoiled one?
The only thing she was right about is that my parents pay for me to be in a fraternity. That’s where my college fund went after I got the scholarship, so I think I deserve that.
My parents grew up poor and made their own success with hard work, and that’s what they raised us to do. And when that GDI gets her degree in Arts Management and can’t find a job, maybe she’ll become a waitress and finally learn about hard work.
Yes, my school is full of conceited pricks and entitled bitches who flaunt their parents’ money and give the Greek system a bad name, but some of us actually worked for what we have, regardless of our parents’ socioeconomic status.
I guess all I’m trying to say is socioeconomic status doesn’t define someone at all. Get to know someone before you judge them.
12 years ago at 12:12 amWhen I was little I was tired of my family being made fun of for being wealthy. I told my dad about it and he told me if someone brings it up again say, “The reason my family is rich because my dad has more education than both of your parents combined.” That did the trick.
