Not an eagle. These planes carry home fallen members of the Armed Forces and are referred to as “Angel Flights.” The flares are intended to cast the image of an angel, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
It’s called the Angel Wing Flare Pattern. It’s the C-130s countermeasures. But since no one has the balls to take us on in the air they mostly just do that for show now because of the pattern they make when used all at once.
1) That is not an AC-130, as was pointed out. However, it was pointed out incorrectly. No AC-130 has a 155mm on it. Both Spooky, AC-130U, and Spectre, AC-130H, have a 105mm.
2) That flare pattern has nothing to do with anything, except the placement of the flares on the plane. That is a flare dump, where all of the flares are jettisoned from the plane.
3) C-130s do not typically bring home fallen soldiers, the C-17 is usually tasked for that because the C-130 is too slow and does not have the range to make a transatlantic trip without refueling.

12 years ago at 1:19 pmThe flares aren’t intended to do any such thing haha. That’s just what happens when the smoke from the flares hits the weak from the propellers.
