        Staunchly is an adverb. Adverbs modify verbs. Republican isn’t a verb. So you are wrong.

        By your logic one could not say “Being sloppily drunk.” One could only say “Being a sloppy drunk.” Which has a slightly different meaning.

      Adverbs can also modify adjectives. Time to hit up 1st grade English for your grammar lesson and 1st grade PE for your laps.
