I lost all respect for Bill Nye when I found out he was a bleeding-heart liberal. But then again, I didn’t really think about him too much after elementary school. After his Obama endorsement he somehow became one of America’s preeminent scientists even though all he has is a mechanical engineering bachelors degree from Cornell. Sort of how Neil DeGrasse Tyson hasn’t done shit for science either but apparently is the smartest physicist in America.
No one is calling Tyson the smartest physicist in America. There are probably 10x smarter people working as professors in leading universities. Nye and Tyson are as popular as they are because that’s exactly what they are — science popularizers. They’re good at getting people excited about science and educating them on the fundamentals.
Also, “just” a mech eng bachelor’s from Cornell is nothing to scoff at. The vast majority of engineers do not get a masters or doctorate.
Tyson’s degrees from Harvard, and Columbia plus his numerous research publications and staff position at Princeton would indicate he’s plenty smart. Plus, he has been on presidential commission to head up space exploration work. He focuses on science communication to encourage people to get interested in science and has been able to parlay that into numerous books and TV deals which have to take in cash. I’d say he’s smart
As far as his political leanings, you can’t really expect someone as embedded into the scientific community as he is, to support a political party that often denies and fights against what his life is dedicated to – science.
