Billy Mayfair Honors Pat Tillman with Near Ace at TPC Scottsdale
The 16th hole at the TPC Scottsdale in Arizona is notoriously rowdy, and Jarrod Lyle had already nailed a hole-in-one earlier in the afternoon.
Regardless, Billy Mayfair, who lives in Scottsdale and attended Arizona State University (also Pat Tillman’s alma mater), threw on the #42 Tillman jersey before teeing off. Mayfair approached the 150-yard par 3 with a 9-iron, and hit a beauty that barely lipped out of the hole.
It was a magical moment for Mayfair and the fans.
“At first they were just cheering ASU, ASU,” Mayfair said, “but when they saw Tillman on the back, they started chanting, ‘Tillman, Tillman, Tillman.’ I think even any University of Arizona people would’ve been cheering. Pat was a hero, no doubt about it.”
In case you’ve been living under a rock: Pat Tillman is a national hero, having left the NFL to serve his country in the Army, before tragically dying in Afghanistan.
