Bloomberg Announces The Fraternity That’s Most Likely To Kill You

And your “deadliest” fraternity, according to Bloomberg, who sourced “lawsuits and college officials” is — *drum roll please* — Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Congratulations, boys. Recruitment just got harder.

According to Bloomberg’s data, there have been 60 “fraternity-related” deaths in this country since 2005, nine of which were “related” to SAE, one of the nation’s oldest and largest fraternities, yielding over 240 chapters and 14,000 active members. (It’s notable that the data does not account for the percentage of deaths related to particular fraternities, which one would believe is relevant when calculating a fraternity’s “deadliness.”) This is horrible news for everyone, particularly SAE, but it seems outlandish to me to label a fraternity as “deadly,” as if they are a group of ruthless murderers.

Three of the nine deaths were results of hazing. This, of course, is inexcusable. One woman was hit by a drunk SAE who’d driven home from one of his fraternity’s parties — also inexcusable. One member died of alcohol poisoning at an SAE event.

Of the remainder, it’s hard to directly put the fraternity at fault. One non-member died of hypothermia after having left an SAE event. One pledge died after being kicked out of a bar for excessive drunkenness at an event hosted by SAE and other organizations. One member was hit by a drunk driver after leaving an SAE event. And one member who lived in the SAE house died of a drug overdose in his room on a night that SAE was not hosting an event. Are these four tragic deaths related to SAE? In the sense that the fraternity was a detail in how they got where they were — yes. Did SAE kill these people? Does this make the fraternity deadly? I’d argue it doesn’t.

I know that when an organization or venue provides alcohol, they are technically held responsible, but in cases such as all of these, the lines seem to blur. It’s hard enough to keep track of a crowded house full of people — a crowded house full of adults — at an event, but harder still to keep track of them after they’ve left, or when no event is taking place at all.

Yes, there are fraternity-related deaths every year, and yes, each is horrific and bone-chilling. There’s no denying that. But attempting to stigmatize an organization — a subculture — with a word like “deadly” is careless and downright unfair. No data has been presented on similar deaths among college students outside of the Greek system, people who drunkenly stumbled out of a non-Greek event and toward their deaths. Pure incidence is not as statistically meaningful as percentage, and certainly, it’s not the same thing as “deadliness.”

How is it not? The article itself isn’t so much about SAE being the “deadliest” fraternity, but rather that another Dartmouth- esque kid came out to talk about his hazing. While the fact that the kid came out of the closet sucks for National image, the support of the alumni is overwhelming. Also, its good to know that pledging hasn’t taken a hit regardless of these rats

people like you, brothernero, are the reason why sae has a bad name. yeah fuck the pledge for coming out, lets completely ignore the fact that he was hazed in an inhuman way. screw that kid right?, its not like hes a human fucking being or anything. lets starve and beat him like hes a war prisoner in vietnam. you honeslty desevre to burn and rot in a hole you worthless piece of shit. i fine with some levels of hazing but the fact that you support the treatment that kid received is disgusting. im tired of scumbags like you giving the greek community a bad name

also the fact that you are using our motto in such a way is just as bad. souless people like you may support and be ok with deaths due to pledging. but the majority of actual TRUE GENTLEMEN, have zero tolerance for this. its ashame i have shithole brothers like you

Who is responsible when a pledge is killed, but the pledge is actually an 80 year old man, and he dies from heart problems during a topless KY jelly wrestling match? #RestInPeaceBlue

Not the fraternity. It’s the chicks’ faults cuz they didn’t warn him about the soon-to-be-released titties. Poor guy’s ticker couldn’t take that without a warning.

your a disgusting person and dont deserve to be an sae. to other fraternities out there, let it be known that these few awful human beings that call themselves SAE do not represent our fraternity. we are fraternity of gentlemen and behavior and hazing to this level is not acceptable to our standards.
PA to my real brothers out there, because being a sae is alot more than just the title. This asshole clearly dosent understand that

They don’t represent your fraternity? Pretty sure they do. It seems the majority of SAE members have some idiotic perception that death is a good thing? If after all these deaths your nationals haven’t rained a shitstorm on every chapter, or even seemed to make it a big deal to their members, they probably wouldn’t just post these insensitive posts about their own brothers? SAE seems like they have problems from the top to the bottom, and are making the Greek community look like fucking fools. I think it’s hilarious the only people in this column trying to talk up this are SAE’s themselves. Thank you to SAE on the Idaho campus for making our campus go dry by 2015 because their careless partying and overall disregard to anyone else other then themselves.

We are making the Greeks look bad? You mean the largest and most successful social fraternity in America. Clearly SAE as the fraternity that was the first organization to remove “the white male clause” from it’s membership requirement document, the first fraternity to erect a national headquarters building, and the first fraternity to have a national leadership school is making the Greeks look bad. What a bullshit statement, let’s be real our fraternity took Greek life to a professional caliber. Those of you who have leadership schools and headquarters and diverse membership within your chapters, you’re welcome for the ideas that my fraternity gave you. You’re welcome to be able to have an example to follow and a shadow to stand in. I’m not saying we are perfect, I’m not saying all of our members portray the standards of a true gentleman. However, before all of you other organizations get on your high horse and look down upon SAE because of a few unsavory actions of several of our brothers how about you look at our organization as a whole. All of our universities along with most non-greek Americans judge us (All Greeks not just SAE) because of what they saw in Animal House or because of what one of our thousands of members has done. We all fucking hate when ignorant gdi’s do that to us, so why the fuck are we going to sit here and do it to each other.

^PA to that. i cant add anything more because you said it perfectly. Theres problems with every chapter, the reasons why there is more with SAE is because there so many god damn chapters. Of course the largest fraternity in the nation is going to have more deaths than a small fraternity with 20 chapters. its common fucking sense

I know any amount of deaths is sad news, but i’m sure 60 “fraternity related” deaths in 8 years is a small percentage compared to other deaths on college campuses.

I’m pretty upset with my brothers who are celebrating here. The fact of the matter is that a larger percentage of our brothers died than other fraternities. I really don’t find that cool, funny, or something we should brag about. We’re better than that.

Clearly you were not paying attention. It is not on a percentage basis. In fact, this article by Bloomberg like many others in similar media outlets has stretched statistics and thus the truth to fit their needs, an article that sells.

Only 3 of the 9 deaths discussed were directly the result of a brother’s actions upon another affiliated member.
