Bobby Bowden: “Take Down the Paterno Statue”
Former Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden is a respected icon and the ultimate ‘good ole boy’ head coach of college football. He also ranks third among Division 1 football coaches in number of wins, has a couple national championship rings, a slew of conference titles and bowl wins, and dadgum, when Bobby’s got something to say, you best pull up a chair.
This time he’s talking about the Paterno legacy, and because it’s Bobby, it’s noteworthy. A little backstory is prudent first. Some speculate, even though Bowden will likely never go public about it, that Paterno has always irked him a bit with Joe’s prolonged tenure at Penn State. He sits up in the press box in the air conditioning, sipping warm milk before his post-game naps, and he’s racking up wins to put Bowden’s legacy further in his rearview mirror.
Bobby, being the honorable man that he is, takes the high road on the subject. Well, now he’s speaking up a little bit in light of the recent Penn State developments.
Bowden told the Open Mike program on 740-AM in Orlando that the Joe Paterno statue on Penn State’s campus should come down, though with a unique and somewhat-compelling argument.
Bowden’s argument for removing the statue has little to do with Paterno himself; instead, he points out that it will only serve to start conversations about the scandal and as a target for television cameras. Bowden explains that with an administration and coaching staff entirely removed from the mistakes of the Paterno era, they need to put up an “iron curtain” with the past and move on; moving on would, thus, be hindered by that rather prominent reminder.
High road. Again. That’s Bobby Bowden. Follow the link below for the audio, and listen for some classic Bowdenisms; you’ll hear a “dadgum” and a “statcha.”

Hey spacebro, how about you read the article before you talk out of your ass and post something because of its headline… A few idiots cheated in an online course, something that Bobby Bowden, nor any of the other coaches had anything to do with. I’m pretty sure that is nowhere near as terrible as the Penn State scandal.
13 years ago at 2:33 amHey Roger, catch. *throws jersey*
13 years ago at 1:36 pmfucking sweet Dorn
13 years ago at 1:37 pmThanks, kid. You’re sweet, too.
13 years ago at 1:40 pmWell fuck Dorn, do ya like commas? Seems like you worried about one of them queers calling you out for punctuation errors.
13 years ago at 12:48 amI do believe that comma before “too” was unnecessary.
13 years ago at 7:39 amPoor little Bobby is really that jealous of Paterno? “High road” my ass.
13 years ago at 1:41 pmYour Canes looking good this year?
13 years ago at 1:44 pmYou are so far up BB’s Bhole. Fortunately, you think his shit doesn’t stink so it could be worse.

13 years ago at 4:12 pmPoor little Bobby? That man has accomplished more in his life than you ever will.
13 years ago at 5:03 pmIf he acts like a child I will treat him like one. On a similar note, Sandusky has accomplished more in his life than you ever will. Does that mean you can’t criticize him?
13 years ago at 7:58 pmAs probably the only person on this site who actually KNEW Bobby Bowden, he’s probably right…but then again he also said he’s choosing to remember Joe as he knew him, not from all this bullshit…
13 years ago at 1:47 pmHEY EVERYONE! THIS GUY KNEW BOBBY BOWDEN. *Slow Clap*
13 years ago at 3:15 pm*No one joins slow clap*
13 years ago at 3:53 pm^hahahaha
13 years ago at 9:23 pmMy father played for Bobby in the ’80’s. The influence he had on my dad’s life, and subsequently mine and my siblings, can never be repaid. There is not another man on this planet that i owe more to than Bobby Bowden. I met Bobby on numerous occasions and he always recognized me and knew mine and my younger brother’s name. Everyone he comes in contact with feels the same way…like you are the only and most important person he is going to talk to that day. He is a man of upstanding integrity and he happens to be exactly right about the Paterno statue issue. He certainly is not the kind of man who would be jealous or envious of Joe Pa in a situation like this.
13 years ago at 11:14 pmPaterno might have more victories than Bowden, but the comparison between Bobby and Paterno can now, and never again should, be made. That would be incredibly insulting to the incredible legacy of Bobby.
Go Dadgum ‘Noles.
My grandfather played at florida state with burt reynolds. Nobody cares about that story and nobody cares about yours.
13 years ago at 12:50 am^^”There is not another man on this planet that i owe more to than Bobby Bowden.” You must have a sad life.
13 years ago at 10:37 amI played for him on his last year, and there is not a person on this planet who had more class, and dignity than Bobby Bowden. End of story.
13 years ago at 10:55 amI once made eye contact with him at a Logan’s Roadhouse.
13 years ago at 3:51 pmI saw him in Athens one time about 30 yards away. And I owe him more than anyone on this planet.
13 years ago at 5:06 pmI met him at a Cracker Barrel last year. Nice guy.
13 years ago at 7:49 pmI read about him in an article one time.
13 years ago at 8:34 pmI saw him all the time on this box I have sitting in my living room.
13 years ago at 8:36 pmFree Shoe University ring a bell to anyone?
13 years ago at 1:52 pmReally?! Retail theft does not compare to fucking little boys and covering it up!
13 years ago at 2:10 pmCan’t it be both?
13 years ago at 3:08 pmSeriously tho, standing up in a booth is bullshit. The head coach should be on the sidelines.
