Breaking Down Every 100M Gold Medalist Racing Each Other Since 1896
Great video put together here by The New York Times. It’s pretty fascinating how far the human athlete has developed in such a short period of time. The whole thing is definitely worth a watch, but my favorite part is the comparison of modern day 8 year-olds to 1896 Olympians.
From the video: “America’s fastest 8 year-old did the 100 meter dash in 13.46 seconds, which would have put him less than a second off third place in 1896.”

12 years ago at 3:35 amTo be fair, the timing in the early olympics was shoddy at best, they weren’t concerned with accurate times and world records, it was literally anyone who wanted to compete from only like 14 countries, the athletes were just every day normal guys and they were more concerned with who came in first than how fast they did it, so they were just like yeah that was about 12 seconds.
