Cal State Offering Segregated Housing For Black Students Doesn’t Seem Like The Best Way To End Racism
California State University announced that it will offer segregated housing for black students to provide a safe space free of microaggressions.
From Breitbart:
Black students will have the option to move into a residential complex solely for African-Americans. The decision to provide segregated accommodations comes just nine months after the university’s Black Student Union presented a list of demands to the university’s authorities to challenge what they perceived as endemic racial discrimination.
I get wanting to be around people who have similar world views. And it sucks that black kids at Cal State have felt so persecuted for the color of their skin that they demanded to be separated from other races entirely (whether that persecution is real or perceived or exaggerated doesn’t matter — perception is reality and telling people not to be offended won’t do shit). But segregation is not the solution to the racial tensions at Cal State or anywhere in the world. The only way to end racism is to have blacks and whites and browns and yellows and purples all living in the same community. Eating. Studying. Watching Netflix. Listening to music. Partying. Fucking. We do all that together, and we realize that there are no differences between us. None that matter anyway.
But if a student goes through those crucial bonding moments — moments that only early college dorm life can provide — separated from all other races, he or she will likely remain separated for the rest of their college careers. Not because they’re racist, but because college kids bond with whoever surrounds them.
College is possibly the best place on earth to bring people from different backgrounds and ethnicities together, and it’s a damn shame Cal State is preventing that from happening..

This is ridiculous. I’ve learned the most from people who aren’t like me. I won’t lie and say I have a hugely diverse group of friends but the point of college is to expand your view, not limit it. No growth happens that way.

9 years ago at 2:34 pmCan I live there if I identify as black?
9 years ago at 2:41 pmYou can only identify as a man, woman, it, or creature. Identifying as another race is where they think you’re crossing lines.
9 years ago at 3:06 pmWhy in God’s name would you do that!?
9 years ago at 6:50 pmMore scholarship opportunities.
9 years ago at 8:48 pmEven though this was part of the demands for one of those ridiculous groups they’re still going to get triggered because “segregation is still alive and well in the 21st century” just watch.
9 years ago at 2:44 pmAs a member of this minority group, even I don’t believe this is the right approach. If anything, this may serve to create even more tension through lack of cooperating with all other races. And if I wanted to stay in a black community, I’d go to the chiraq, and you know how fucked things are over there.
9 years ago at 5:37 pm“And we need this, this, this, etc.” Giving in to idiotic student demands should NEVER happen. Administration is so scared of losing students. The likelihood that students would actually drop out or transfer because of “micro-agressions” is so slim. Most of their parents pay anyway, they wouldn’t let their kid leave bc their feelings were bruised.
