Clemson SAE Suspended After “Clemson Cripmas” Party

Clemson Cripmas

Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Clemson University has suspended all activity indefinitely after the fraternity was connected with a party dubbed “Clemson Cripmas” at an off-campus house on Saturday night. The gang-themed party stirred up controversy immediately after photos hit Instagram and other social media platforms, prompting the university and SAE nationals to act swiftly.

From WYFF 4:

Most of the fraternity chapter’s officers have resigned from their positions and have been suspended from the organization, according to the statement.

University officials said any member who attended the party may face suspension as well, pending the results of an internal investigation.

This is why you stick with the basics, kids. White Trash Bash, Golf Bros and Country Club Hoes, or maybe even an ABC Party. No one’s getting offended by your TaylorMade hat or you having the audacity to rock a traffic cone as pants. The next time you discuss party themes, just think: “Could this party theme be perceived as racially insensitive or politically incorrect?” If the answer is yes, do not proceed. Be smart.

“Oh my god they threw a party that event somewhat represented black people?!”
Let me protest and bitch to the media. Nobody ever complains about a white trash bash or something to make fun of anyone other than blacks.

How is this offensive to someone’s culture? To me, saying that it is means you accept gangs as a part of your culture, and feeds the “all gangbangers are black” stereotype

        Make it legitimate:

“It’s now very common to hear people say, ‘I’m rather offended by that.’ As if that gives them certain rights. It’s actually nothing more… than a whine. ‘I find that offensive.’ It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. ‘I am offended by that.’ Well, so fucking what.” -Stephen Fry, The Guardian, 5 June 2005

  3. Clemson student here:
This was all a huge overreaction.
Cripmas happens every single year (going back to at least 2006), and it is simply SAE’s take on your typical Christmas sweater pre-finals week party.
I have about a million reasons why this whole situation was ridiculous, but I will stick with just one or two for right now:
    1) A “Cripmas” party is a party themed around mainstream gang/thug behavior. It is a GANG theme, not a RACE theme. If any Crips on Clemson’s campus are upset about it, they have every right to be. But, if you’re just a run of the mill person who isn’t in a gang, then shut the fuck up. This isn’t about you.
    2) A horribly written CNN iReport article was written by some Clemson student of below-average intelligence. In the piece, the student attempts to call out “White Clemson” for oppressing “Black Clemson”. For the past 4 1/2 years I have spent here, I have never once heard those terms, and I’ve never once seen any sort of racial oppression on this campus.

Essentially this is a bunch of ignorant complainers trying to stir up racial tension where there isn’t any, and it has no place at my university or in America. Damn.

I agree with the overall point you’re making….

” If any Crips on Clemson’s campus are upset about it, they have every right to be.” I’m not sure how this would even be offensive to a Crip. If some black organization wants to have a WASP party where they wear cardigans, scarves and serve cheese and whine I’m not going to fucking bitch. Where do we draw the line? Can my parents no longer have their friends over for Mexican food and serve Coronas and Margaritas with it? Am I a racist if I go into a Mexican bar and order a loaded Corona? Not sure when it became okay to go out searching for things to be offended about…

Glad to know this has been going on for the better part of a decade which completely invalidates any claim that it was in response to protests. As always, fuck the liberals.

It’s like anything else. People who stick their nose in other people’s business and go out of their way to get offended typically don’t have any money and are always fighting the inferiority complex they’ve brought upon themselves from making a lifetime of poor decisions. Their source of blame is never themselves because blaming “white privilege” makes them feel less accountable for their own bad situation. On the flip side, you get plenty of well-off liberals trying to turn non-issues a race/class/sex issue because they truly believe life can be puppies and rainbows if everyone is nice to each other and they feel like they can change the world by speaking out against everything, so they do, often. It’s just sad that people now days feel like they have a constitutional right to never hear anything they don’t want to hear, like nobody should ever be forced to feel badly about anything ever. So pathetic.

Drives me nuts. I’ve seen too many white people overcome severe adversity by working their ass off for a few years, their race really had nothing to do with it. The only privilege they posses is the “privilege” of donating large chunks of their paychecks via taxes to liberals who think that any idiot stocking shelves deserves a house in the Hamptons. Sorry your African American studies degree is only useful to protest stupid shit on campus but these fuckers really need to work on doing better for themselves instead of complaining that other people have some kind of privilege.

      3. These (^) kind of arguments only serve to give more ammunition to the protester. While I may or may not agree with your sentiment, arguments that even touch on race or privilege will be seen as fuel for the race card propaganda. My point is this isn’t a race issue at all. As such, race discussion don’t pertain here, and ultimately, only weakens my original argument on a logical/credibility level.

Wasn’t all Greek life suspended after Tucker’s death? This question isn’t to be bashful on Clemson by any means, I’m just confused on how they could get suspended after everyone was already suspended.

      1. All but 6 of the social fraternities were reinstated 2 weeks before homecoming – the administration faced a lot of fire from the alumni who expected the homecoming floats to be constructed on Bowman field (Clemson homecoming tradition since the 50’s). IFC told the administration that we wouldn’t build floats if we weren’t reinstated. They caved.

As USC student I want to apologize for FrattyLightSC, he was probably a bridge kid. Secondly I hate CNN iReport because most people just see the CNN part and think it’s a legit article and not some poorly written attempt at race baiting. Thirdly I thought your VP of student affairs resigned recently? Who’s calling the shots on this?

11 years ago at 1:00 pm
      1. Glad to see there is some intelligence in the heart of our state (I have a cousin who graduate from there, so I know there are a select few of you).
Understandable about the bridge kids – we have our own program of that sort.

Gail did just recently ‘resign’. That has been largely brushed under the rug, but the announcement came the day before police reported they are nearly finished with the Tucker Hipps’ death investigation. Seems a bit odd to me that the vocal figurehead that crucified fraternities in the wake of that incident ‘steps down’ at the same time that the investigation is coming to a close.

Also of note, the interim VP that our president put in place is known for actively fighting Greek life. When she was at Clemson in the past (early 2000’s), she tried her best to get Greek life removed.

I believe Clements (our president) is facing serious pressure from the trustees to make major changes at Clemson to try and save our oh so precious top 20 ranking. The obvious target for that is the Greek community. We are an easy scapegoat given the circumstances of this semester, and who better to target in PC America than a group known for very vocally not giving a single fuck about being PC?

        I rest my case.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. It really is a shame that they always go out and find anti-greek life people to “fix the greek life problem” when in reality all that does is create a bigger rift between the university and greek life. And piss off a lot of alumni.

But I feel for you guys and hope someone in the administration up there gets a brain and realizes this is only a problem because a whiney 1% made it a problem.

I’ve got a lot of friends that are in Clemson and I was up there for the Carolina Clemson fan. They said the exact same thing. It’s a complete overreaction based upon a popular stereotype that everybody notices. If you wear all blue and dress gangish then everybody stereotypes it as a crip. But just because a fraternity in the south does it. It’s horrible and racist. Nobody down here has even seen a damn crip. It’s frustrating to get called a racist because I’m in a fraternity in South Carolina. Shows how ignorant some people are

Fuck this, my chapter has done the same exact thing year in and year out. This isn’t meant to offend anyone, it’s just a theme idea. White trash bash is just as racist, just no white people claim it to be offensive because it’s funny. Might as well not do a Christmas theme because that’s offensive to people who aren’t Christian Right?

Fuck the punishment and the administration who made the punishment. Its way too harsh for the theme, but they’re fucking idiots if they thought people weren’t going to be offended by it especially considering the recent national events…. Goulet

That’s fucking it. How the fuck is this racially insensitive? When did it become “racially insensitive” to dress like fucking gangsters that makeup the scum of society? You know what really sucks? Being in a fucking gang. Liberal media: fuck you.
