College Football Moving to Playoff Format?

BCS Commissioners and Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick met in Chicago Thursday to discuss the possibility of moving to a playoff format for college football in lieu of the current BCS system. You know, the system that is widely regarded as the biggest crock of shit in sports. Just ask Auburn fans how much they supported the BCS system in 2004 after going undefeated in the SEC and NOT receiving an invitation to the national championship game. Computers currently determine the invites for the natty.

“Considerable progress” are words being muttered after the conclusion of the meeting. The proposal included the BCS games remaining intact and serving as a four-team playoff derived of the top four seeded teams in the country. The seeds would be determined by record, strength of schedule, and conference championship games. The national championship would be held in the city with the highest bid. That’ll be some exciting shit by itself.

If this proposal is approved by the BCS presidential oversight committee during their meeting on June 26, the new playoff system will begin in 2014, leaving us only two more years in the current BCS system. It’s almost here, guys. I can taste it. A true goddamn national champion. I’m not saying pop the champagne open yet, but I’d at least throw it on ice.

He’s just trying to make up for the fact he joined the shittiest fraternity in the Greek system. Sigma chi is good, along with every fraternity you bash because, spoiler alert, its not yours. Now go do something productive with your life so you can be a real fraternity gentleman.

Finally! I have been saying this for years. Now if only we could get MLB to use instant replay to overturn call like in the NFL.

^this. replay for pitches would be out of hand, but anything resulting in a run or any kind of game changing play should be double checked

I want to see a plus-3, with the winners of the existing BCS bowls playing each other. Maybe it’s not as big of a deal around the rest of the country, but conference-affiliated bowls like the Rose Bowl are a huge part of college football (especially for the Big Ten and Pac12), and shouldn’t be mindlessly thrown away. However, if they do go with the plus-1, I hope they settle on a conference-champs-only invite.

I agree. I think it would be a cool system if the winners of the BCS bowls formed the playoff tree leading to the championship.

Conference champ invites only? No way. You’re gonna have a lot of years when you have 2-3 legit contenders and then the rest are throw aways. If you have multiple contenders from the same conference, you can’t punish them just for being in a stronger conference.

^ yes especially in the SEC one division (usually west) will have 2 teams with identical records but only one will play in their championship game. So the conference-champs- only invite is flawed

I just don’t want to see something happen to where it turns into NCAA basketball and the regular season doesn’t matter. 2+1 is just fine, but if it turns into a 16 team deal, that’s just too much. I don’t want to see rivalry games like OSU-Michigan not mean anything just because one team has already locked up a playoff slot.

Great post. I agree 100%. The great thing about the BCS system is that every regular season game is so big, especially for title contending teams.

I mostly agree, but my counterpoint would be that rivalry games like tOSU-um are already diminished with the advent of the conference championship system in most leagues. Even now, it’s more important for um to beat MSU than for them to beat tOSU, on account of being in the same division. That’s why I can see Delany’s case for a champs-only playoff: If you want the regular season to count, letting teams in that don’t even win their own division won’t help.

Well, I was watching SC and most agreed that a 4-team is the absolute best way to go. Maybe a 6-team, but certainly not an 8-team. But yes, there should be no fear of some regular season games not counting. That’s the difference between College football and basketball, football requires a must win, perfect season. Basketball isn’t quite like that; rather, if a team loses a regular season game, or 8, they can still make the playoffs and have a chance to win the championship. That’s not necessarily bad, but that’s not how football should work. Both sports are different.

Hopefully this all works out. The Nebraska chancellor isn’t to pleased but what do you expect from the Big Ten?

bottom-tier across the board… because he knows at least two SEC teams will be in the top four from here on out. No, no, that’s a fact.
