      Commodore – you capitalize “Nation” when referring to the United States, for the same reason you capitalize “God” when referring to the Christian God.

      I want to argue that that’s not necessarily true. Had he said “[the] Nation’s flag” I’d give it to you. But in the context he used it “our nation” would make more sense, just like you wouldn’t say “our State” or “our House”.

      The g in God would be capitalized, in that context, because you are referring to a person. When using the word “nation” as a synonym for a country it would have to follow “the” as in “the Nation”. It doesn’t work the way it was used above because “our nation” is not a synonym for the US, if it was it would read as “our United States of America’s flag” where “the Nation” reads as “The United States of America’s flag.”
