Daily Beast & Newsweek Release Their Top 25 National Fraternities and Sororities List

The Daily Beast and Newsweek Magazine have released their 2012 College Rankings List, and it’s pretty much like every other college rankings list you’ve ever seen. There are categories for prettiest campus, biggest party schools, happiest colleges, etc. They did however also take the time to rank the top 25 fraternities and sororities nationally. The explanation of their rankings, and the rankings themselves, are below. I’m not going to lie, some of the criteria they used for these rankings seemed… odd, or at least not as fully encompassing as they should/could have been, but with that said the rankings, especially the top 5 for each category, turned out more or less how I thought they would. There were, however, a few surprises.

Top 25 Sororities

To analyze which sororities have the largest national footprint, most devoted sisters, and greatest philanthropic footprint, we compared the 26 Panhellenic Conference sororities based on the number of active collegiate chapters, the number of Twitter followers and Facebook fans (to measure alumni and member interest) and the amount of money the sorority’s non-profit fund donated to 501(c)(3) organizations according the most recent public filing (funds were normalized using a per-chapter ratio). Funds donated to individual chapters, classified as a 501(c)(7) non-profit social club, were not considered for this aspect of the ranking.

We attempted to get an accurate count of the current number of active collegiate chapters from a variety of sources, and contacted all sororities to verify. Several sororities and The National Panhellenic Conference declined to participate or comment for this article due to their governance policies.

Top 25 Fraternities

For all the attention devoted to the hazing practices and bullying of a few collegiate fraternities, the average Greek frat brother is more active in his community and has a higher G.P.A. than his non-fraternity peers. (Ed. Note: Boom roasted) In order to compare the 75 fraternities that are members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference, we first considered the number of active collegiate chapters for each. We also considered the number of alumni who are currently members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the alumni, if any, who became president. Lastly, we considered the amount of money the fraternity’s non-profit fund donated to 501(c)(3) organizations according the most recent public filing (funds were normalized using a per-chapter ratio). Funds donated to individual chapters, classified as a 501(c)(7) non-profit social club, were not considered for this aspect of the ranking.

  1. Pee where she poops

They haven’t produced any presidents? They must not be a good fraternity.

12 years ago at 10:23 am
  2. Joran van der Frat

I’m confused. The list is titled “Top 25 Fraternities” but TKE is on there.

12 years ago at 10:24 am
    1. GodDamnLiberals

Yes, and even though i’m not a Deke, where the hell are they? Don’t they have like 5 presidential alumni?

12 years ago at 11:08 am
    2. PiKapp444

Yeah, DKE has the most presidents out of any national fraternity, 5 I do believe. I also wondered why Phi Delt wasn’t on there too.

12 years ago at 11:34 am
    3. PTBAP

PDT is not on there because it only takes into account those in the NIC. I had to do a double take when I realized we weren’t on there as well.

12 years ago at 2:51 pm
    4. Teddy__Brosevelt

^^^ Hayes, Teddy Roosevelt, Ford, G.H.W. Bush, G.W. Bush.
This list was clearly well thought out.

12 years ago at 3:45 pm
    5. libbinout

^Add FDR to that list too. He was a Deke at Harvard (Alpha), although that chapter is no longer active.

12 years ago at 7:02 pm
    6. The Golden Fleece

They rated fraternities based on number of presidents and congressman, and yet DKE (5 Presidents), Phi Delt (take your pic of Reps. and Senators), and Kappa Sig (good handful of Senators, Governors, and Reps.) are nowhere to be found. Glad they threw in some NPHC chapters though, you know, to be diverse.

12 years ago at 9:21 pm
    7. Teddy__Brosevelt

^^^ But FDR was also a member of some other fraternity at the same time.. So I’m never sure who gets to claim him.

12 years ago at 8:25 pm
  3. Davy Frockett

It would be interesting to see where Phi Delt, Kappa Sig, and Phi Sig would land on this “list” of the top fraternities.

12 years ago at 10:25 am
    1. Jon M Fratsman

Phi Delt, KSig, Phi Psi, and DKE should definitely have been on here. Phi Sig…eh. While the only PSK chapter I know of is pretty much top-tier at their school, they’re not all that hot nationally.

12 years ago at 11:25 am
    2. Frat On Brother

Haze Hipsters, first off- thats one badass name. Second, no need to get butthurt man. Maybe one day a girl will come over and party with yall

12 years ago at 11:29 am
    3. Davy Frockett

^ That’s kinda what I was getting at. Phi Delt, Kappa Sig, and Phi Sig were just three that I knew were not members of the NIC. One would think the second largest weekly news magazine, after Time, would do a little more research on their articles and not leave out three fraternities that are all well over 100 years old.

12 years ago at 2:21 pm
    4. AsigUntil_iDie

^^^ cool sigma chi is about to be 157 years old congrats hitting that century mark

12 years ago at 4:48 pm
    5. EvanCHILLiams

You do know PDT came before Sigma Chi? Did you not learn about the Miami Triad in pledge training, AsigUntil_iDie?

12 years ago at 11:48 am
  4. Pee where she poops

They don’t shut down bad chapters and they will colonize anywhere. Must be too busy performing fellatio on one another.

12 years ago at 10:25 am
  5. Pee where she poops

They don’t have a national philanthropy, must not donate anything whatsoever as a whole.

12 years ago at 10:27 am
  6. Mr Penguin

“Ctrl F” must be broken, I cant seem to find the term kitchen anywhere in the sorority rankings.

12 years ago at 10:31 am
  7. Jefferson_Davis

So how did the black fraternity make it on here? The writers must have not been trying to discriminate

12 years ago at 10:37 am
    1. Joran van der Frat

It was probably one of the eight million new requirements that were part of Obamacare.

12 years ago at 10:43 am
    2. TrickleDown

Affirmative action: all black members in fraternities get free membership and dues are paid by the taxpayer. This is to make up for systematic discrimination against those who have historically not been able to be in fraternities. By letting them in free we can diversify greek life!

It’s scary how that actually sounds believable.

12 years ago at 11:09 am
  8. sratcitybiotch

Bizarre. Best fraternities based on the number of congressional alumni and
number of presidential alumni while the best sororities are based on Twitter and Facebook. wow.

12 years ago at 10:38 am
    1. I am drot nunk

Shitty reporting. If I had to make a list, I’d have based it off of total philanthropic money, famous alumni, F500 CEOs, congressional and presidential alumni, size, and age.

12 years ago at 11:46 am
    2. WallyWhitecross

I’ll save you the time and research. Under those qualifications, it’d still be Sigma Chi at the top.

12 years ago at 4:20 pm
  9. fratyliteonthefratio

I definitely respect a couple of the fraternities on this list, but it’s clear shitholes like Sig ep won’t be able to maintain in years to come. Money donated and political alumni come from a time before their pussification.

Also, this list is total bullshit. The Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign is a separate corporate entity from Kappa Sigma National Fraternity, and I would put money that we raise a lot more than, say, Sammy. I can also point to Senators and Congressmen who I have the privilege of calling brother. I would also put other large, respectable, and powerful IFC fraternities like Phi Psi, Phi Delt, and Chi Psi above the engineering and n1@@er shit I see here.

Fuck this list, fuck TKE, fuck Pike, and FUCK Sig Ep. Get on our level.

    1. ksigREP

Hey remember these are just the fraternities in the conference and Kappa Sigma decided to leave it because of disagreement on the conference future goals and we really dont need them.

12 years ago at 11:02 am
    2. fratyliteonthefratio

i didnt read that close, but I also didnt know the conference had multiculturals… I thought that was multicultural greek council. Anyhow the exclusion of Phi Sig, Phi Delt, and Kappa Sig renders the rankings moot.

12 years ago at 11:10 am
    3. GodDamnLiberals

^^^Someones mad that they didn’t make the list, proving once again Sigma Chi is superior to all others. In Hoc

    4. fratyliteonthefratio

sharing a list with Alpha phi alpha, TKE, Pike, Sig Ep, and the scum of the nation’s greek system. TFTC?

Also we have 23 congressional alumni, hot shot. Go blow a shotgun.

12 years ago at 11:19 am
    5. Jon M Fratsman

^^ Easy brother. Although the KSig chapter at my school is by and large full of geeds, they definitely should have made the national list (along with Phi Delt, DKE, and Phi Psi).

By the way, almost none of the totals of congressional alumni are right.

12 years ago at 11:23 am
    6. GodDamnLiberals

Agreed brother, kick ass name by the way. I’m just surprised how angry people get by bullshit rankings and other content on this site. Instead of having an aneurysm they should calm down and throw in a lip and drink a beer, but maybe we can do that because we’re not insecure little princesses who need validation of their worth.

Kappa Sig is one of the strongest southern fraternities. Also out west I guess its ok but I can’t speak for the north; I don’t know anyone in any chapter above UVA. Regardless this list is bullshit and this reporter is a GEED

12 years ago at 6:11 pm
