Duke Student Admits To Being Porn Star In School Paper
There is some unusual stuff going on at Duke University.
It started when a male student spotted something unusual while watching online porn. It was one of his classmates at Duke. Instead of sweeping it under the rug, he chose to confront her about it. She admitted to him that she participated in the adult film industry and swore him to secrecy, hoping that the story would die there.
It didn’t, obviously. The male student ended up telling many people.
News of a Blue Devil porn star quickly spread on the Internet, with most responses being anything from confusion (attractive girls go to UNC, not Duke), to curiosity, and even anger. Instead of ignoring it, the outed porn star/college student opted to sit down with the student paper and discuss it in the public spectrum. Her answers are both interesting and thought-provoking.
On feeling like she goes to school with a bunch of virgins (BREAKING: she does), from the Duke Chronicle:
I feel like girls at Duke have to hide their sexuality. We’re caught in this virgin-whore dichotomy,” she said. “Gender norms are very intense here and I feel like that’s particularly carried out by frats. I think that being a woman at Duke is extremely difficult. I think that being a sexual woman at Duke is extremely difficult.
She comes across as incredibly intelligent. She could have found another job to help pay for her $60,000 tuition rather than doing porn, but she makes it perfectly clear that she enjoys doing porn. It’s a fun job for her.
“I have always been a very sexual person, and I’m also bisexual, but I haven’t ever felt really welcome,” she said. “But when I’m in Pornland, I feel at home. This is where I’m meant to be, with these people who love sex and are comfortable about it.”
She experienced a little backlash about her stance on the adult film industry, especially from the Duke community. Obviously, there’s a negative connotation with being a porn star, but then you realize this girl will never have to deal with student loans, and suddenly, you kind of get it.
I’m not condoning or condemning her actions. I’m just saying we should leave the poor girl alone. If she wants to spend her life in Pornland, that’s fine. It’s not our position to say whether or not that’s a good or bad place to live (it sounds awesome).
