Duquesne Students Fear On-Campus Chick-Fil-A Will Violate Safe Spaces
This has got to be one of the first documented cases of college students lobbying AGAINST bringing a Chick-Fil-A to campus. What’s there to hate about the establishment? Their chicken sandwiches are absolute fire and what I assume heaven is made out of. Their breakfast food tastes like puppy paws and fine-aged whiskey. Ya know what it probably is? It’s because they’re always closed on Sundays, and that’s always when I want a spicy chicken sandwich the most, and I always forget until I pull into the drive thru, and then a rush of regret, sadness and personal hatred for myself rushes over me.
No, it’s not that, but some students at Duquesne University, a private Catholic university in Pittsburgh (remember this point), are lobbying against plans to bring a Chick-Fil-A to campus because they “fear” the fast food business will threaten students’ safe spaces. Oof.
The Duquesne Duke:
At the March 26 Student Government Association meeting, Senator at Large Niko Martini proposed that the SGA pass a resolution asking the university to reconsider the inclusion of Chick-fil-A as a dining option for students.
…
“Chick-fil-A has a questionable history on civil rights and human rights,” he said in a statement to The Duke. “I think it’s imperative the university chooses to do business with organizations that coincide with the [university’s] mission and expectations they give students regarding diversity and inclusion.”
…
“I’ve tried very hard within the last semester and a half to promote this safe environment for the LGBTQ+ community,” [Lambda President Rachel] Coury said. “So I fear that with the Chick-fil-A being in Options that maybe people will feel that safe place is at risk.”
I don’t think the addition of a Chick-Fil-A on a private Catholic campus is going to turn everyone against the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, if you want to talk about “a questionable history on civil rights and human rights” then why in the hell are you going to a school run by the Catholic church in the first place? That’s like a four to five year (or six if you’re going for that Master’s in Gender Studies) triggering experience every single day. Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sunday’s, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas because it was founded on Christian beliefs (which is essentially the tomato to Catholicism’s tomatoe in the religion circles).
You know what triggers me? U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement centers. But guess what I do. I take the looooong walk around it to get to where I need to be so I don’t see the building, fall to the ground and burst into flames. So far, so good. I’m still here, baby.
We’ll wait and see how this one plays out, but I’d be surprised to see Duquesne balk on this one. There’s only been so many times when a spicy chicken sandwich has caused so much uproar.

Duquesne alumnus here — speaking as one who has spent hours shitting his brain out from the school food, a Chick Fil A on campus would be almost ubiquitously cheered save for individuals like Mr. Martini. I had a class with him before and he was a total boner, always interrupting the prof with shit questions that really stemmed from his lack of objective thinking. So I’m really not surprised to see that he opposes better food on campus …
9 years ago at 9:20 pmNortheastern in Boston had a similar incident when Chick fil A was rumored to be coming to their student union. Never mind the fact that the restaurant chain quietly prepared food (on a Sunday) for people lining up to donate blood after the Orlando shooting at a gay club last year. Wouldn’t want to mention that since it goes against the left’s narrative.
9 years ago at 10:03 pmI feel like keeping chick fil a off a campus of thousands of college students in the name of the LGBT community will inspire more hate for the LGBT community than any action chick fil a could undertake. People don’t like losing great thing and they will look for someone to blame.
9 years ago at 1:18 amWhat exactly is a safe space?
9 years ago at 9:29 amWhere you go to jerk off undisturbed.
9 years ago at 11:46 amApparently anyone who has different opinions than the SJWs is “violating human rights.” GFY SGA
9 years ago at 9:32 amThese kids should be thankful, chick-fil-a is good from the heavens
9 years ago at 12:40 pmChick Fil A actually donated a ton of money to the victims of the LGBT nightclub terror attack in Orlando but college student Johnny Woke over here definitely made like 8 Tumblr posts about it so we know who the compassionate one is here.
9 years ago at 1:32 pmPeople that actually use the word safe space is why I’m glad abortion is legal.
9 years ago at 11:15 pmChick-fil-A is a private business with no official political stance. However, in an interview with the 90-something year old owner, he said he had no problem with gays but opposed gay marriage. The people that think the whole corporation is like that are misinformed, and worse, stupid
