Fans Heckled Sergio Garcia By Chanting "U-S-A!" During Sunday's Playoff

The great thing about watching Sergio Garcia on Sunday, when he is in contention, is that you know the inevitable collapse is going to happen at some point. Whether that be on the front, the back, or in a playoff, he’s just not going to win. The 35-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won a tourney since the Wyndham Championship in August 2012. Naturally, this will lead to some heckling from the gallery during his round.

Sunday’s final round was no different for Sergio. He received some heavy heckling from fans in the gallery. The biggest incident came during the three-hole playoff. While he was lined up for a 40-footer on 17 (where he sank a 44-foot birdie putt to get into the playoff), some unruly fans in the crowd started chanting.

From FOX Sports:

Garcia was harassed on several shots, most notably when a small group of spectators yelled “U-S-A!” during his putting stroke at the famed 17th green.

Bunch of clowns. I get the U-S-A chants, and I respect the choice in chant because it’s funny, but to do it during a dude’s putting stroke? Come on. Have some respect for the game. Sergio went on to miss the putt, settling for a par before bogeying at 18 ending his shot at a playoff win. He didn’t seem happy afterwards, either and had some strong words for the fans.

“Obviously, some guys there that don’t deserve to be here watching golf, but that’s what it is.”

For the first time in my life, I’m going to side with Sergio here. There is a time and place for a little U-S-A chant on the course. During a guy’s putting stroke is neither the time nor the place. How would you like it if someone was chanting while you putt?

***UPDATE***

A tipster who was at the Players has informed me that Sergio is being a lying sack of shit.

I was at the Players yesterday and was on 17 the entire afternoon, including the playoff.

Sergio is being his typical self here and completely blowing this out of proportion. No one talked in his backswing. The USA chant took place while he was walking the cart path around to the island green.

I don’t recall any fowl play during the backstroke. I could be wrong, but that’s the only time I heard the chant taking place. That all being said, the chant was pretty funny.

If that’s the case, then fuck you, Sergio. I hope you hear nothing but U-S-A chants on every hole you play for the rest of your life.

I love and respect golf. However, if a football QB can hit a receiver on target 60 yards downfield while 7 men are trying to tackle him and 90,000 people are screaming, I think a golfer should be able to make this shot. What about a sniper who makes a 500 yd shot while under small arms fire with artillery exploding around him?

A 40-footer on 17 at Sawgrass, is like a QB throwing across his body, 60 yards down field into double coverage. Most guys are just trying to get it close.

If you are a true fan of golf you would realize what you just said has zero comparison

It’s not about if the player can make it or not, the quietness in golf is tradition. You don’t scream your head off like a classless peon at a tennis or chess match, and if you don’t know how to wait until after the ball goes in the hole, you should just watch it on TV in your double-wide.
If you can’t respect tradition, I’d bet you’re either in TKE or, more likely, in High school.

Force applied to accurately throw a football requires less concentration than the force applied to accurately hit a golf ball with an extended medium. Not the best comparison.

In football target is moving and has a defender who will try to deflect or intercept. In golf hole is stationary and there is no defender. Not about force.

Yes the hole does stay stationary but yet around it can very with breaks, speed of the greens, slopes and it matters to be focus in looking at the hole and what surrounds it making sure when you line up you have a good idea where it’s going to break and how hard you should swing the putter.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say there is Never an inappropriate time for the U-S-A chant!

Nothing better than watching Sergio blow it after he had that shit eating grin after sinking that 44′ bird on 17 in regulation. Everyone but Sergio saw it coming.

There is never a wrong time or place to chant USA. The only thing wrong here is Harrison Lee being a communist.

It’s called etiquette. I love my country as much as the next guy and I think Sergio is a big time douchenozzle, but chanting during his backswing or while putting is just wrong. Don’t respect the player–respect the game.
