Fans Heckled Sergio Garcia By Chanting "U-S-A!" During Sunday's Playoff

The great thing about watching Sergio Garcia on Sunday, when he is in contention, is that you know the inevitable collapse is going to happen at some point. Whether that be on the front, the back, or in a playoff, he’s just not going to win. The 35-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won a tourney since the Wyndham Championship in August 2012. Naturally, this will lead to some heckling from the gallery during his round.

Sunday’s final round was no different for Sergio. He received some heavy heckling from fans in the gallery. The biggest incident came during the three-hole playoff. While he was lined up for a 40-footer on 17 (where he sank a 44-foot birdie putt to get into the playoff), some unruly fans in the crowd started chanting.

From FOX Sports:

Garcia was harassed on several shots, most notably when a small group of spectators yelled “U-S-A!” during his putting stroke at the famed 17th green.

Bunch of clowns. I get the U-S-A chants, and I respect the choice in chant because it’s funny, but to do it during a dude’s putting stroke? Come on. Have some respect for the game. Sergio went on to miss the putt, settling for a par before bogeying at 18 ending his shot at a playoff win. He didn’t seem happy afterwards, either and had some strong words for the fans.

“Obviously, some guys there that don’t deserve to be here watching golf, but that’s what it is.”

For the first time in my life, I’m going to side with Sergio here. There is a time and place for a little U-S-A chant on the course. During a guy’s putting stroke is neither the time nor the place. How would you like it if someone was chanting while you putt?

***UPDATE***

A tipster who was at the Players has informed me that Sergio is being a lying sack of shit.

I was at the Players yesterday and was on 17 the entire afternoon, including the playoff.

Sergio is being his typical self here and completely blowing this out of proportion. No one talked in his backswing. The USA chant took place while he was walking the cart path around to the island green.

I don’t recall any fowl play during the backstroke. I could be wrong, but that’s the only time I heard the chant taking place. That all being said, the chant was pretty funny.

If that’s the case, then fuck you, Sergio. I hope you hear nothing but U-S-A chants on every hole you play for the rest of your life.

Rickie winning The Players after being voted the most overrated player in golf is absolutely a TFM.

Sergio made par at 18. Great journalism, guys.

I’m going to beat this dead horse because you’re wrong. Sergio was the only player on the 18th green in 2 during the playoff, and was putting for birdie to move onto sudden death with the others. He missed, and tapped in for par, although it was a moot point by then. Find me a news source that says otherwise.

If I’m not mistaken, I thought I saw him tap in with his knuckle on 18 after he missed the par putt.
