Father Arrested For Hazing Disciplining Son, Made 16-Year-Old Run Miles Carrying 23 Pounds Of Stone
A father in Georgia resorted to some very, shall I saw, “hazing-like” tactics in an attempt to teach his 16-year-old son a lesson or two prior to Memorial Day weekend. It landed him in hot water with local Douglasville law authorities.
From 11 Alive:
Charlie Mayes, a 40-year-old military veteran with no criminal record, told police he used military-style punishment because his son watched too many videos and didn’t do his chores and school work. Douglasville Police charged Mayes with first-degree child cruelty.
First degree child cruelty? What the hell happened? What’s wrong with letting a military veteran use military-style tactics to discipline his own child? He has to know what’s in the boy’s best interest, right? And it sounds to me like the kid had it coming to him anyway. Watching too many of those Internet videos, flunkin’ classes, and not giving a damn about chores around the house? That rings of a 16-year-old with no respect who needs a lesson taught to him, courtesy of the Montel Williams “Scared Straight” approach or something of the like.
What warrants first degree child cruelty anyway?
Police arrested [Mayes] on child cruelty charges after the man punished his 16-year-old son by making him carry a 23-pound landscape stone for several miles.
“This was done multiple times over a three-day period, sometimes as early as 3 o’clock in the morning,” Police Sgt. Todd Garner told 11Alive on Tuesday.
Seriously, this kid must have been watching a shit ton of videos on the Internet (not the good kind, either).
Garner said the boy, who is only 4’2″ tall, was also punished in-between the 3-mile hikes.
“In between that time, he was at home having to move rocks and stuff from one side of the back yard to the other and then being taken right back out to the same location and dropped off and made to walk back again,” Sgt. Garner added.
Now, normally I’d think this is a little excessive, but from the sound the kid’s height and his father’s military exprience, he probably needed the workout, right? Not to mention, character building. I mean, for this kind of punishment to be administered in the army, you really have to fuck up, so I’m just going to assume that the kid in question must have been cutting every one of his classes every day–clearly not valuing his education–and adamantly refusing to clean his room in lewd screaming matches with his mother.
It’s kind of a shame that veteran Mayes had his Memorial Day weekend ruined when he was arrested. Some dweeb delivery driver tipped off the cops.
A pizza delivery driver alerted police to the teen’s punishment walks, one of which was captured in the background of a police dash cam video during an unrelated traffic stop.
Douglasville police have yet to make the video available, but say the father freely admitted what happened.
“He did not feel that this was inappropriate at all and neither did his wife,” Sgt. Garner said.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, am I right? Carrying around a quarter of your natural body weight for three days on end isn’t something anyone would soon forget, and for good reason.
Mayes was released on $3,500 bond on Memorial Day, and the Mayes family has been court ordered to attend family counseling. I sure hope that 16-year-old punk benefits from it.
