Florida State Greek Life Returns With Caveats
Late last year, Florida State put an indefinite ban on fraternities and sororities following a pledge’s death. A grand jury is currently in the process of prosecuting nine Pi Kappa Phis for their roles in the death of Andrew Coffey, but it seems the school is finally allowing Greek life back on campus with specific restrictions.
From CNN:
For now, a ban on booze — not just at fraternity and sorority events, but at any social event held by the school’s 700 recognized student groups — remains in effect.
If student organizations comply with new regulations, FSU may allow social events later this semester, President James Thrasher said in announcing the new policies. Thrasher suspended Greek activities after Coffey’s death.
Pi Kappa Phi was under similar limitations before Coffey died with a blood-alcohol level of .558. Shortly after this tragedy, the fraternity was then popped with a few unrelated drug charges.
Also in November, two fraternity members — one of them a Pi Kappa Phi, according to local media — were arrested on cocaine trafficking charges.
The now Pi Kapp-less university will try to get their Greek life slowly back into some semblance of normalcy.
If student organizations comply with new regulations, FSU may allow social events later this semester, President James Thrasher said in announcing the new policies.
Sadly, if we keep going down this road and don’t look after one another as human beings first, this will be the new reality of fraternity and sorority life moving forward nationwide..
