Fraternity Members Steal Newspapers After Controversial Article, Tweet Pictures Of Burning Newspapers To Editor

It seems like you hear about fraternities all across the country getting kicked off of campus almost once a week. Whatever causes the suspensions or expulsions usually receives a quick write-up from the student newspaper and everyone moves on with their lives and focuses on more important and current issues. That cannot be said for the editor of CM Life, which is Central Michigan University’s student newspaper. The editor seems to have a creepy obsession with the expulsion of CMU’s Delta Chi chapter, along with other Greek life issues.

Earlier this week, nearly six months after Delta Chi was removed from campus for a plethora of issues stemming from a party at their fraternity house, Editor In Chief Justin Hicks posted yet another editorial in the student newspaper. His column criticizes the now underground fraternity’s members for refusing to break their silence in regards to the incidents. He accuses them of failing to help themselves repair their public image by staying silent and not assisting the student newspaper in its investigation of the reasons behind why the fraternity was kicked off campus.

After the editorial was published, the rightful backlash against Hicks started. It got ugly. Fast. One Delta Chi alumnus even threatened to “bitch slap” Hicks.

Although they most likely grossly overestimated the amount of students who actually read the garbage published in student newspapers, members of Delta Chi and other fraternities were accused of stealing hundreds of copies of the student newspaper from distribution racks across campus. Many of the copies were found shoved into trashcans right next to the distribution bins.

As the newspapers began disappearing, people took to social media to condemn the editor and post pictures of stolen newspapers.

While university police have yet to do anything about the theft of the papers or the blatant destruction shown in the tweets, the newspaper reports that it represents “hundreds of dollars” lost.

Even though I do not support the theft and destruction of student newspapers every time one of their idiot contributors attempts to slander Greeks, this latest incident will hopefully help the CM Life staff get the hint that it’s time to back off and find another story to blow out of proportion.
