George Washington University Hosting Seminar For White Christians To Check Their Privilege

Move over white privilege. There’s a new privilege in town: white, Christian privilege.

George Washington University is hosting a new seminar called “Christian Privilege: But Our Founding Fathers Were All Christian, Right?!” that tackles Christian privilege. Aside from the extremely strangely worded seminar title, the 90-minute seminar aims to help attendees identify how “Christians in the USA experience life in an easier way than non-Christians” and “reflect upon ways we can live up to our personal and national values that make room for all religious and secular identities on an equal playing field.”

Put Thirsty Thursday on hold, Janice. We’ve got some privilege to check!

George Washington University:
Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to describe what is meant by privilege overall and white privilege specifically.
Participants will be able to describe the role of denial when it comes to white privilege.
Participants will be able to differentiate between equality and equity.
Participants will be able to list at least three examples of Christian privilege.
Participants will be able to list at least three ways to be an ally with a non-Christian person.

Oh man. This sounds like an awfully good time. Imagine sitting in a room apologizing profusely for being a white Christian. The emotions. The unjustness. Glad someone is around to check my privilege, and I’d just like to say that I apologize. I expect to be a Taiwanese Muslim by the weekend.

You’re probably wondering how to be an ally with a non-Christian person. Well, I’ve played my fair share of Fortnite team play. It’s highly possible a non-Christian person has slipped onto the squad. No, don’t call me a hero. They’re the hero. They joined the team in the face of so many microaggressions. The bravery.

Best of luck to those attending the seminar, though. I’m sure you’ll have great discussion following Easter break. It should provide great talking points for May 10th’s Ascension of Jesus. Don’t let me catch you praying for a good exam score though.
