George Washington University Students Are Petitioning To Get Rid Of Their Totally Offensive Mascot

Why does everyone always have to drag the Founding Fathers? I mean they lived in a time where some messed up stuff happened, I understand that. And even some of them participated in the messed up stuff, I understand that. But for what they were given, they did a pretty amazing job of making the most of it. If it weren’t for them, we would all live in a world where we report to a king and wear powdered wigs and shit.

So explain to me why these students at George Washington University are petitioning to replace their Colonial mascot who honors these men. Is colonialism bad? Yeah, that’s why we did away with it here. We, as in colonials — like George Washington.

More than 200 George Washington University students have signed a petition calling for the school to adopt a new mascot and nickname because the current moniker, Colonials, is “extremely offensive.”

“The historically, negatively-charged figure of Colonials has too deep a connection to colonization and glorifies the act of systemic oppression,” the petition reads.

It suggests alternative nicknames such as “Hippos” or “Riverhorses.”

The Colonials mascot was adopted in 1926 to honor the school’s namesake, George Washington, and is intended as a reference to colonial America and the Continental Army.

Shouts to this group of students. They fall into one of my favorite genres of people. The type that will go out of their way to take offense for others over something that has only recently become offensive. So kind of them. When they’re not defending marginalized people against the wrath of sports mascots, they can be found posted up at their on-campus Subway, demanding to speak to a manager about how they could ever let a child-diddler represent them.

I’m not against changing this deeply offensive mascot. I just wish they would have chosen a replacement that wasn’t so offensive. Hippos? Really? You want to take an animal who we already exploit enough by locking them up in a zoo for us to stare at and exploit them further? What is wrong with you people? And riverhorse, well some of you might not know this, but river horse is actually just a slur people use to talk about hippos (seriously).

I’m on board. Let’s band together and get rid of this offensive symbol of “systemic oppression.” I just hope that whatever they decide on doesn’t end up becoming offensive one day, too..
