Georgetown University Is Letting Incoming Students Know They Don’t Support Greek Life

Rush at Georgetown University began way back in the middle of September. And on the Friday before rush started, the Vice President for Student Affairs and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs fired out an email to the entire student body discussing their aversion to Greek life. The email was even titled “Message About Social Fraternities and Sororities.”

From the Georgetown Voice:

In the campus wide email, Olson and Lord encouraged students to participate in and explore the diverse mix of co-curricular activities offered but steered students away from unrecognized fraternities and sororities.

“As you make these decisions, we want you to be aware that Georgetown does not support a social Greek system; social fraternities and sororities are not eligible for access to University benefits and do not have University oversight,” Olson and Lord wrote.

The president of Delta Phi Epsilon, Molly Wartenberg, is an orientation advisor for the school. She said that she and the other advisors were sent a similar email back in August, “saying not to advocate for Greek life as an OA” during orientation.

In this email sent on Aug. 5, the 2015 NSO Coordinators wrote that Greek organizations may not take part in university sanctioned activities or programs. This includes OAs using their roles as mentors “to influence students to participate in rush or recruitment.” It also indicates that any violation of the listed policies is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

This is absolute bullshit. Since when are schools telling their students how they should spend their free time, and why do they feel the need to steer students away from sororities and fraternities?

Putting this negative information into the head of new students is a terrible idea, and it’s effectively crushing the Greek system. These kids are young and impressionable and tend to believe most of everything they read because they can’t think for themselves. Shame on you, Georgetown.

To be completely fair, G-Town is a Catholic school and most such schools have never had Greek Life. Think this is more about JC than PC.

Georgetown is about as Catholic as the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea is democratic

Many Catholic schools have Greek life on campus. More small scale but very much there.

I know, I went to one. But as far as I knew, Seton Hall & Villanova were the only catholic schools that allowed it. My parents school for instance never did, I know it’s very much banned from Notre Dame. Just saying given their affiliation this night not be the lefty social justice crowd to blame for once.

This is kind of taken out of context. Georgetown has never had Greek life, and is simply maintaining status quo. There are some underground fraternities, but the social scene thrives on secret societies (similar to harvard’s finals clubs) and athletic team parties. You can’t really persecute Greek life it wasn’t there in the first place

Sounds to me like they don’t have a Greek system, and that any Greek organizations are not chartered. Of course that is without me doing any research. If that is the case they are justified, if not then no.

Jesuit schools like Georgetown, BC, St.Joe’s, and any other Jesuit school (ie Society of Jesus) aka the order that gives you the current Pope. Generally recognized as very forward thinking order has tolerated Greek life at many of its 29 schools. That being said they generally aren’t huge fan of Greek life . Keep in mind many if not all of these schools are under 10K undergrad and many times under 5K. The point is this is absolutely nothing new.

As an active member of georgetown’s greek community I cant say forcefully enough how frustrated I am with the administration. Luckily, greek life is growing while the school is running out of reasons for why joining a frat or sorority doesn’t “align with jesuit values”.
