VIDEO: Guys Reveal What It’s Like Being Openly Gay And In A Fraternity

Yeah, this one might seem off of the usual TFM path, but this video is extremely interesting. Fraternities and sororities get stigmatized all the time. One of the more common (and false) stigmas is that fraternities aren’t accepting of gay members. As this Buzzfeed video shows, that’s largely untrue.

You want some knowledge, baby birds? I’ll feed you. Check out this vid of guys that are openly gay talking about their experiences in Greek Life.

The most important takeaway from this video is that most houses will ask you to pledge or not pledge based on who you are, not your sexuality. I’d say 99 percent of the time, a guy who is gay and a good person will get a bid over a straight guy who’s a shitty person.

My house had an openly gay guy in it and it was awesome. He is an amazing brother and always brought cheerleaders to the party (Spoiler alert: Many times they’d leave for “classier” parties after everyone cavemanned a few beers and got the floors all nice and sticky. Sorry for partying).

The point is, if a house cares about your sexuality, then it’s a shit house anyhow.

Gay, straight, whatever — your brothers have your back.

So as you can see by my username, this video resonates with me. Fun fact, both myself and my big are gay (not the reason we were paired up, we were friends prior to either of us joining). My chapter and national organization as a whole have always been very accepting and the only time I felt ostracized was at a national conference when a 3rd party organization was educating us on sexual abuse (it was a very hetero-normative presentation) and all the situations were boy-girl. If I remember correctly, every fraternity on my campus has at least one gay guy in it. If there was one that didn’t, it might be TKE (but I mean, they’re TKE. It’s hard for them already)

I would never in a million years have guessed that any of these guys are gay.

Honestly just a perfect example of what Greek life is about, being completely accepting because of the bond of brotherhood

Having a gay dude in your fraternity would be absolutely terrible. Just makes shit awkward for everyone in the chapter. TFM has gone to shit.

Awkward like everyone in your chapter realizing they gave a bid to a dipshit? yeah man, sucks

Take your PC bullshit and get outa here. If you’re gay keep that to yourself, don’t make the chapter feel uncomfortable. Nobody wants to worry about having some drunk gay boy(s) trying to hit on other dudes at your fraternity parties.

This is a liberal site. You can’t win but I can’t help agree that I don’t want a gay person in my fraternity.

How the fuck do you know that you don’t? You can’t tell by looking. Hell, I roped with a guy for two years before I knew he was gay. He’s a redneck cowboy. And you don’t want to get into a fight with him because he’ll kick the living shit out of you and spit Red Man in your eyes while he’s doing it.

Why would it be awkward? Do you not realize that gay people are all around you? With your attitude I hope you work in a self-owned business or you’re going to have a lot of trouble in life. PC has nothing to do with it. Decent human behavior does. Grow the fuck up.
