VIDEO: Guys Reveal What It’s Like Being Openly Gay And In A Fraternity

Yeah, this one might seem off of the usual TFM path, but this video is extremely interesting. Fraternities and sororities get stigmatized all the time. One of the more common (and false) stigmas is that fraternities aren’t accepting of gay members. As this Buzzfeed video shows, that’s largely untrue.

You want some knowledge, baby birds? I’ll feed you. Check out this vid of guys that are openly gay talking about their experiences in Greek Life.

The most important takeaway from this video is that most houses will ask you to pledge or not pledge based on who you are, not your sexuality. I’d say 99 percent of the time, a guy who is gay and a good person will get a bid over a straight guy who’s a shitty person.

My house had an openly gay guy in it and it was awesome. He is an amazing brother and always brought cheerleaders to the party (Spoiler alert: Many times they’d leave for “classier” parties after everyone cavemanned a few beers and got the floors all nice and sticky. Sorry for partying).

The point is, if a house cares about your sexuality, then it’s a shit house anyhow.

Gay, straight, whatever — your brothers have your back.

Story time: So I actually had a brother that was a few years old come out to me in private, I was one of a few others that knew at the time. Nervous as all hell he asked if he could just talk and as soon as he told me my immediate response was “Okay, so what did you want to talk about?” He was surprised at how relaxed I was with it and I immediately gave this man all the backing he could need. In his time with us he ran both philanthropy and social media, created a new philanthropy event at our chapter thats caught the eye of nationals and is being implemented elsewhere, won several awards for our chapter, work two jobs, captain of a club team for four years, and a 4.0 graduate. And he’s still dating dudes I guess. TL;DR Amazing brother of mine came out as gay still backed him cause that’s not the only thing that defines him as a person.
