Hazing Scandal Hits The Citadel

Hazing Scandal Hits The Citadel

Seems like a new hazing scandal hits the news every damn day.

Today, our story comes from The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, S.C., comprised of cadets pursuing their degrees. It is an accepted practice for the older students to discipline knobs (AKA the freshmen). However, four upperclass cadets have left school and 20 others have been disciplined for hazing allegations.

From the Charlotte Observer:

Four upperclass Citadel cadets have left school “voluntarily” and 20 others have been disciplined after the institution investigated some 85 allegations, many involving student hazing, the school announced late Friday afternoon.

No reports have come out describing what these hazing allegations are, but I can assume that they are nothing more than simple mental strengthening exercises. The incidents were reported after a Feb. 8 meeting with freshmen cadets and Capt. Geno Paulso, the commandant of the cadets.

The school received the allegations after the commandant of cadets at The Citadel, Capt. Geno Paluso, held a Feb. 8 meeting with all freshman cadets “to remind them of their duty to report any instances of hazing. He gave them until noon the next day to report violations or face possible disciplinary action,” the statement said.

It sounds like he put the proverbial gun to these kids’ heads and forced them to report something. I would wonder if the possible disciplinary action resembles anything that the upperclassmen are being accused of. Overall, it’s a pretty fucked up situation that these upperclassmen are leaving school and being disciplined. If more information comes out about what these incidents entail, we’ll keep you updated.

Oh no! I would hate for freshmen to have to run a few miles in the middle of the night! Pussification of the USA continues

I’m pretty sure you couldn’t make it through the citadel so don’t brush it off like it is pussification. I am not saying that I could make it; I am just saying that hazing definitely happens at the Citadel. This article talks about how a knob was physically beaten, denied medical attention with a fever of 102, had his classwork destroyed and threatened that he would be burned to death. http://www.rockdalecitizen.com/news/2011/dec/28/local-youth-details-hazing-at-citadel/ There are also rumors that upperclassmen would make knobs get naked and hold swords underneath the knob’s balls as they struggled to do as many pull ups as possible. Running a few miles in the night doesn’t begin to describe the Citadel.

I know what you meant. the Lords of Discipline is a book about hazing at the Citadel in the 1970’s. Most if these guys probably don’t know that.

I guess we can’t talk about mild hazing here at all. I sent in a Wall post about bringing a cattle prod that was fixed where it wouldn’t shock into the house and hanging it on the wall for psychological purposes and couldn’t get it posted. I suppose that’s too far out for the establishment these days. Scheesch. Pussification ain’t the word for it. It’s more like the emasculation of the American male by politically correct douches.

Complaining about hazing at a military college? Im sure your ROTC is much worse.

Actually it isn’t. I’m a cadet at Ole Miss and there’s zero tolerance or it.

let me rephrase your statement: you’re a cherry little boot going to college and taking ROTC classes which cannot compare in the least bit to a service academy.

The academies have more officer supervision and are a lot easier on freshman. From what my cousin said about the citadel and from what my father said about the Air Force academy in the 80s. The citadel is in a different league when it comes to hazing freshman. Apparently at the citadel there’s little to none active military officers in their barracks and it is run by upperclassmen who all haze the hell out of knobs.

FBR- That’s because the Citadel isn’t an actual military academy (i.e. West Point, USNA, USAFA), which is why its not run by real military personnel

      4. FBR

That’s why I said the academies are easier on freshman. And separated the citadel from the grouping of the academies. The citadel is a military institution such as the Virginia military institution. (VMI). What I meant when I said military officers. I meant any sort of school official are absent in the barracks of the citadel and are run by upperclassmen.

Wrong. There are almost always 3-5 retire military officers in each barracks at all time except at night when there’s only 1. The president of the school is a retired 3 star and every member of the administration is retired military as well.

Nah at the citadel they made knobs swallow dip spit and do push ups on their toes with tacks on the bottom of their shoes. Also theus get air soft guns and tie knobs to railings and shoot them while asking them questions. I’m surprised it took them this long to figure it out. *source cousin is alumni and told me all about it

And I’m sure when he told you, he didn’t want you going out and sharing it with thousands of people online…

I wouldn’t share the information if it in any way would jeprodized his military career or cast a shadow upon the citadel. If somebody were to have asked when his stories occurred I would have said that he would have been a knob in 2003 I believe. So I don’t think that they will be looking into allegations of hazing that occurred a decade ago.

So what you’re telling me is that the men and women that are going to the citadel and then going to basic can’t handle a little hazing? Boy are they in for a surprise when they get to basic training. The pussification of America continues.

10 years ago at 11:34 am
    1. bdandrea2

More than half of them don’t go to basic. Only a small amount of them actually contract to a branch, the others just graduate and that’s it. That’s why half of them bitch about being hazed.

You couldn’t be further away from the truth. If anything the ROTC NATZIS from high school that are use to getting dunked in toilets and locked in lockers come here and cant take another 4 years of getting their lunch money stolen. Soft is genetic and this generation needs to toughen up and deal with hardships because nothing in life comes easy.

About 30-40 percent of cadets receive a commission to one of the branches upon graduation. The ones that are snitching are the ones that were losers in high school and go to the citadel because that want to be “badass” and they realize they’re still losers.

Only a fraction of ROTC/Citadel Cadets go to basic training. I’m in Army ROTC and I’m going to basic training and tanker school this summer. It’s called the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) where you are enlisted in the National Guard and also an ROTC cadet. It’s a pretty good deal, and I’m glad i’m getting enlisted experience before commissioning

I appreciate the fact that you are joining and support you 100% but doing ROTC and being in the National Guard before being commissioned is not enlisted experience because you won’t actually be doing anything, no deployments and barely any other experiences. This coming from a retired Marine.

10 years ago at 12:56 pm
      2. Sand_Hill_Alum

actually dude it does count as enlisted experience. I’m in the guard and used to do rotc. your time as a cadet in the guard counts toward your enlisted contract. say you enlist straight out of high school, go to college fresh out of basic and AIT, then get contracted, your time in your unit counts as time served. when you commission you will have nearly 4 years of service under your belt when you start your new contract as an officer

10 years ago at 1:24 pm
      3. Phi1057

You don’t quite understand what he means by enlisted experience. Experience would be actually doing a job as an enlisted person. Not going through an officer program the whole time you’re enlisted. You don’t get “enlisted experience” that way. Besides the idea that mustangs are better officers is a stereotype. Plenty of officers who come straight from college are great because they’re willing to shut their mouth and learn from their enlisted and plenty that are mustangs are shitty officers because they think they know it all because they’re prior service. If you’re enlisting just to become an officer then quite frankly youre a fucking idiot.

Phi1057 has the best point, and not sure what the fuck the other guys are trying to talk about with SMP and stuff. I’m SMP and pretty much you just shadow around a unit, maybe get to do exercises and stuff with them. Though technically enlisted, your MOS is like 93x or something which is an observer or something. Now that we have a good argument on officership and obscure I’m-enlisted-but-not-really scenarios, I think the article was about hazing..

I have a friend who is a knob at the Citadel. He tells me that all the stuff they do that is considered “hazing” sucks, but is funny in hindsight. Next thing you know they wont be allowed to be forced to do pushups or run outside of PT.

    1. cadet12345

That’s what all these charges are about. It’s not about true hazing. I’ve had several friends resign already because they has knobs, who consented to this, do push ups.

    2. TooBusyYachting

You say that it’s funny that you wont be able to run outside, but I’ve gotten in some small shit with officers for running my Marines outside of PT. We had some down time, so we went for a little 20 minute run, and next thing I know, some shiny collar is telling me to get my Marines inside out of the sun or I’ll be facing hazing charges.

I think from now on TFM should report these hazing stories with more details. We can’t just throw it out in the air and call it the pussification of the USA when some people are really just fucking insane. Hell I’m in the state of fucking Florida so I would really like to know what the fuck is considered too much when it comes to hazing from a national perspective if I was a freshman pledge. Idk that is just my honest perspective. And no I’m no freshman but I feel we have a duty as Greeks to at least set the fucking bar within ourselves minus nationals political bullshit.

10 years ago at 11:51 am
    1. PIKAUSERNAME

Also, taking a group of pledges on a camping trip is hazing in Florida. So pretty much anything can be hazing, but I agree some more details would be nice.

As a current cadet at The Citadel, I can say that there are actually a lot more allegations. Very few of which actually fall under the school and state’s definition of hazing. The vast majority of the charges are because knobs agreed to receive PT as a punishment when they do not meet standards. The current commandant threatened them with honor violations and toleration of hazing if they do not rat out the upperclassmen. Push ups are not hazing and no one was hurt in this process.

There’s being a pussy, and then there’s going overboard. Before you get your panties in a knot, how about you get facts about what they were actually forced to do. Some hazing is not chill

10 years ago at 12:25 pm
    1. TGI_Fraturday

Most likely had to do push-ups or wall sits or some form of PT. We only did the real shit to the guys we knew wouldn’t snitch and the ones we liked. It was sort of a badge of honor to be hazed hard. If you weren’t you felt like you were left out and let down your classmates.
