High School Quarterback With What Might Be The Stupidest Play In The History Of The Sport
I like to think I have a pretty good analytical grasp of football, enough certainly to scream at the TV when the Cowboys choose to call three straight passing plays in medium yardage during overtime when they have the best running back in the league twiddling his thumbs in the backfield. As a sports enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of boneheaded plays, but this particular play from the Utah state playoffs may very well be the worst I’ve ever seen.
The Spanish Fork Dons are up 14-11 over the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles with 3.5 seconds left on the clock. You would assume that they would just drop into the victory formation, take a knee, and hit the showers, but they didn’t. Instead, the quarterback runs backward in an effort to literally run out the clock. Just to make sure there wasn’t some rule I didn’t know of, I consulted my roommate, who’s a former Texas 5A All-State safety, as to whether there’s some weird rule about taking a knee in high school football. He confirmed what I already assumed to be blatantly obvious: of fucking course you can take a knee.
So we’re already in dumbass territory with this decision, but okay, let’s live in this world for a bit. The quarterback runs around for a bit and successfully eludes the defenders until the clock strikes zero. All he has to do is sit the fuck down and the play is over. The only problem is that he doesn’t. Instead, he just sort of stops and stands there, at which point, some enterprising linebacker runs up and strips the ball, allowing another defensive player to pick it up and waltz in for a game-winning touchdown. Keep in mind, this isn’t some garbage team that doesn’t know how to play football. This is the Utah 4A playoffs.
PLAYOFFS.
I don’t even…just watch the damn thing. Tune to 46:33 for the dumbest football play you’ll ever see..

11 years ago at 10:06 am“Hell ya guys we did it, YES” quickly turned to uncontrollable from the quarterback.

11 years ago at 1:09 pmis this a joke? it’s fourth down if he takes a knee the clock stops on a change of possession… play call is fine but executions is God awful..
11 years ago at 10:11 amI dunno, maybe take the knee AFTER the clock expires? Just spitballin’ here…
11 years ago at 10:38 amI think that what he’s getting at with the whole execution being God awful thing, Chief.

11 years ago at 3:13 pmFor Godsakes, what Sterling means is the kid should have taken the knee after the clock expired.

11 years ago at 10:15 amHe didn’t let the ball get stripped he just tossed it to the ground, that’s what we in the game like to call a bold strategy cotton
11 years ago at 10:19 amIf you watch before the delay of game penalty you see that the marker says 4th down. In the heat of the moment, the QB forgot that the clock running out doesn’t stop the play.
