Homeless Man In American Flag Shorts Steals Beer Truck, Leads Cops On Chase

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be homeless. Where would I go? How would I survive? It seems that a big part of making it out on the streets is throwing caution to the wind and riding with your instincts. You’ve got to keep your head on a swivel, and when the time is right, react. If not, you may go without anything to eat or drink that day.

So when 46-year-old Matt Hermsmeyer saw a truck full of ice cold beer left unattended, he didn’t waste time thinking, as any of us would. He just reacted, hopped in that mofo, and took the fuck off.

A homeless man dressed only in American flag shorts was arrested Thursday after allegedly stealing a truck full of beer and leading police on a highway chase, authorities in Northern California say.

Police later identified the suspect as Matt Hermsmeyer, 46. He was charged with suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, priors for auto theft, resisting arrest and violation of his probation.

A GPS system inside the truck gave police the suspect’s location “within minutes,” according to the report.

Santa Rosa police officers, including a K-9 officer and his partner, and a Henry-1 helicopter unit from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the scene where witnesses reported seeing the suspect on foot after having apparently abandoned the truck.

Stealing isn’t right, and yadda, yadda, yadda, but let’s be real here. Jacking a truck chock-full of beer while wearing nothing but USA trunks might be the most American thing of all time. It literally goes apple pie, fireworks, and then this.

And I know what you’re all thinking, boy it’s a shame there’s no video of this theft in progress, and unfortunately there’s not. But how about a clip of our perp weaving his way through traffic? Would that tickle your fancy?

Sadly, Matt didn’t piece together that the chopper hovering above could actually see him, and decided he would just wait it out in the bushes. He was promptly captured. With prior auto theft charges and violation of probation, it’s safe to say he won’t have to worry about being homeless again for a long, long, time..
