Iowa State Fraternity Members Give Advice On How To Dress, Probably Read Too Much TFM

Three Iowa State fraternity members were recently interviewed by ISU’s independent student newspaper, the Iowa State Daily, for an article about how to dress for fall fraternity rush. Fraternity members interviewed include Connor Klein of Phi Delta Theta, and Jeff Roane and Robbie Stokka of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The three ISU students offer up suggestions to incoming freshmen participating in fraternity rush. They suggest wearing shirts from your typical, preppy clothing brands: Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, and of course Ralph Lauren. They also agree that the standard khaki shorts match very well with these classic shirts. You can even get a little crazy and throw some brightly colored shorts in the mix to stand out in a crowd, according to them.

When it comes to footwear, however, they all agree: wear the absolute fuck out of some Sperrys. When asked to share advice about proper attire, below is what each of them had to say.

Per Connor Klein:

“Wear chino-style shorts, a standard oxford shirt and Sperrys for sure.”

Per Jeff Roane:

“A polo shirt, khakis and Sperrys is a typical outfit.”

Per Robbie Stokka:

“Pocket tees, Sperrys, Chubbies and a Hawaiian shirt.”

I don’t know what the marketing department at Sperry is getting paid, but it’s not enough. They have somehow made their brand name synonymous with the generic term “boat shoe,” or “loafer,” at least within the 18 to 24-year-old demographic. It’s similar to how you call tissue “Kleenex” instead of tissue, or the classic, short-sleeve collared shirt a Polo. It’s a miracle marketing scenario, and it’s made these respective companies a metric fuck ton of money.

Anyway, I have some fashion advice of my own: wear whatever the hell you want. Damn.
