As I understand it, there are two big reasons the NCAA doesn’t want to start paying players:
First, some colleges can pay and some can’t. Allowing colleges to pay players would entrench some programs as winning programs and others as losing program based on their ability to pay. Granted, our current system isn’t perfect but it’s as fair as you can make it. No way the other hundreds of member schools in the NCAA are going to be ok with the top 25ish school getting all the talent (or at least more of it then they get now) and with it the profits from winning.
Second, Title IX fucks it all up. If you really wanted to pay Football and Basketball players (the only programs that really make money) you would also have to pay the women’s badminton team the same amount. This would get super expensive and would be mean the Football and Basketball programs are subsidizing even more of those program’s expenses.
I go to UCONN. All the meal plans are unlimited and all the athletes get the most expensive meal plan. Shabazz is my hero but that was just fucking wrong
