Kappa Sigma At Duke Has Been Suspended, But Not For The #RacistRager
Allegedly…
Last week we reported on the live on-campus protest that went down at Duke in response to #RacistRager, a racially-insensitive, Asian-themed party thrown by the Kappa Sigma fraternity — after a campus outcry to cancel the party proved futile. Although the rager was deemed wildly inappropriate by many students, faculty and other members of the Duke community, no actual rules were broken.
However, the fraternity has been suspended by the university. The reason for the suspension is not disclosed, but it is not related to the #RacistRager according to Larry Moneta, the university’s vice president for student affairs. Believe that if you want, but it smells like bullshit to me.
The interim suspension “has nothing to do with the Asian-theme party,” said Larry Moneta, the university’s vice president for student affairs. “In my meeting [with leaders of the Kappa Sigma fraternity] we discovered other issues that are being investigated.”
Moneta said that he was “not able to share anything further about the basis for the interim suspension.”
Moneta also states that the future status of the chapter will be under the discretion of the Kappa Sigma national office.
So, why the suspension? Anyone know? No?
This smells like the ole cop practice of “I can’t ticket you for being an asshole, but I’m sure you’re breaking some kind of law…and when I find something on you, I’m taking your ass to jail.” You know that move, right? Sure, the suspension had “nothing to do” with the #RacistRager, but it was motivated by it.
