Keith Olbermann Calls Penn State Raising More Than $13 Million For Cancer Research “Pitiful”

Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 11.11.59 AM

Before Skip Bayless firmly sat down and took the ESPN throne for King Troll, the role was admirably fulfilled by one Keith Olbermann. His shtick eventually ran its course, and an ugly divorce between the worldwide leader and Olbermann sparked a decade-long feud.

Since the folks up in Bristol have zero shame, ol’ Keith has since returned and has relatively flown under the radar even though he still spews out the same aggressive, asinine opinions on his daily program, “Olbermann.” I imagine this is due to no one under the age of 55 watching this snoozefest of a show with humor that comparatively makes your dad’s jokes come off like Louis C.K. But if you thought Olbermann would stand for this irrelevance, you don’t know Olbermann.

He has finally caught the attention of the youth — and particularly every student at Penn State.

Alright, Keith. Not even going to ease into this one, huh? Let’s see how this plays out.

Dave put up an admirable fight, but he made the classic mistake of feeding the troll. Under no circumstance should you ever answer a troll with a serious response. There’s just no scenario where you don’t lose both time and brain cells.

The thing about Olbermann is that he’s such a pompous douchenozzle that even when he knows he’s in the wrong, he’ll never admit such weakness. Just the worst kind of human being.

Finally, a tip of the hat to everyone up at Happy Valley for raising more than $13 million for cancer research. Youse guys (channeling my inner Philly) are the real MVPs.

Update

From ESPN:

We are aware of the exchange Keith Olbermann had on Twitter last night regarding Penn State. It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the views of ESPN. We have discussed it with Keith, who recognizes he was wrong. ESPN and Keith have agreed that he will not host his show for the remainder of this week and will return on Monday. The annual tradition of THON and the efforts of the students of Penn State to fight pediatric cancer should be applauded.

ESPN no doubt forced his hand on this one. Like I said, Keith wouldn’t willingly admit fault.

I’ll get down voted, but look this up yourself when your finished with outrage against me. Something like 80% of money raised for cancer goes towards ‘administrative’ costs, which means the salaries of the people running the foundations. If there is a doctor here, back me up- cancer is genetically impossible to cure. I’ve had family with cancer and these foundations never helped them. The Susan B. Koman foundation is one of the biggest scams out there.

Theoretically, cancer can be cured. Current research is trying out how to kill these cancer cells without killing large amounts of natural human cells. This requires money for salaries, equipment, substances, and more to make the drug that works. Sorry about your experience though.

Hey dipshit, THON is run purely by students..There are no “administrative” costs. Over 95% of the proceeds from THON go directly to the Four Diamonds Fund which main goal isn’t to find the cure that your dumbass thinks is impossible to find (nothing is impossible you weak minded pussy)..Most of the money goes to paying off the treatments etc. for all THON kids who go to Hershey Medical Center. Those families do not have to pay a cent. Where others go broke trying to pay for treatment, THON families are carried and receive support every step of the way. Educate yourself before you speak. Drugs that are unnecessary?…Are you actually fucking stupid?.. The drugs prolong the lives of the patients in most cases?.. Sure there are negative aspects to it, but its worth fighting through that in order to live. But I’m sure you wouldn’t know anything about fighting for something because you sound like a complete bitch.. Those drugs allow them to keep pushing in hope that one day there will be a cure, because no matter what Wikipedia told you, a cure is possible

The drugs don’t keep them alive. If they live, it is because their body was strong and would have lived anyway. If I found out I had cancer today, the best thing I could do to survive is eat healthy, work out, stretch, get fresh air, and not worry about.

It’s not the thought that counts.. It’s the effort that we are giving in hope that one day we will succeed and we won’t have to dance at THON anymore that counts.. We are trying to make a difference and we are seeing tangible results.. We don’t just sit on computers and bitch and moan that all is hopeless. There is hope in every situation. But if the world was full of people like you, who have lost all hope, then quite honestly we would all be fucked. You are terrible

I’m being pragmatic. Cancer is incurable. You can do all the Thons you want and talk about hope, but at the end of the day it more about your desire to look and feel like you are making a difference. You are not accountable for any results. In the meantime people are getting bilked out of money.

God forbid people donate money to help offset the costs of cancer treatment for little children who have never done a harmful thing to anyone. Their parents can’t afford the treatment, so instead of trying help we should sit there and turn our noses up. I am about as conservative as they come but charity is a great thing. Seriously, you really need that 10 dollars that you will be spending on cheap booze and porn sites? Ask anyone who has ever been through the battle and has come out cancer-free if the drugs are “unnecessary.” I agree that in certain cases medicine cannot help but I’m going to side with 99% of medical doctors who have a fucking degree in medicine. And last, but not least, ask a Four Diamonds kid if THON and all the moral support that comes with it doesn’t make them feel better, even if just for a moment. I’ve always thought you were fun to mock, but now I realize you’re just a fucking idiot.

We are in agreement more than you think. I am 100% in support of a charity who clearly states their purpose. For example if a cancer charity states that their purpose is to to give the family money so mom and dad can take off work to be with their child, I am all for that. If they state that their purpose is to provide money to cover flight, hotel, or Disneyland expenses that is fine. And as long as the money is used for these purposes that is fine. But when they peddle salary hope of a cure or create a false sense of crisis, I have a problem with that. I have a problem , in general with people who announce and promote their ‘philanthropy’ on every social media platform for kudos too.

Unless science finds a way to stop the aging process, cancer cannot be cured. Cancer is what happens as your genes degenerate, which is inevitable. An Illinois doctor was recently convicted of falsely telling 25 people they had cancer so he could collect Medicare. They didn’t have cancer. They underwent chemotherapy and took the expensive drugs. They died from chemo and cancer drugs, which break down your immune system.
Unless it’s skin cancer which can be easily cut out, most people are better off letting their body naturally fight the cancer versus going through chemo and taking the cancer drugs.
Cancer awareness is legit, but giving money for research is the ultimate heart strings scam.

We’ve been curing cancer (or at least putting it into remission with a high success rate) in lab experiments with mice and tissue samples for 30 years. The hard part is finding a cure specifically for humans by testing treatments on human subjects without risking their health. It will take time, but there is a cure to be found. Happy thoughts and eating healthy like you’ve suggested is not that cure.

While you are dead wrong that cancer cant be cured, you have a point about big organizations like that. A lot of them (including Susan B Komen) take the majority of the money and use it for salaries, administrative costs, etc. which is why it is important to do your research before you donate to charity. There are more than plenty of organizations out there that raise and give tons of money to cancer research every day

For the one I can remember, my mamaw’s, she would have been better off not having to deal with the bills and drugs. These foundations help, some and for that I think they are amazing but we got no help. The drugs which may help some and put their cancer in remission drained the life out of her. As a 6 year old it was heartbreaking and still brings a tear to my eye. She eventually passed away from what I blame on chemo as she died from an infection. I pray that there will be a cure but what we have today doesn’t help everyone.

In 250 years we have gone from horse drawn buggy to a space shuttle. From a quill and paper to an iphone. From a basic musket to an ICBM. We have cured malaria, polio, measles, bubonic plague, and can transplant hearts. But cancer had barely made the jump from horse drawn buggy to horse drawn buggy with cushioned seats.
We have spent more on Cancer than all other diseases and the Apollo program combined.
The flu kills more people each year than cancer. Needle dick.

11 years ago at 2:38 pm
      3. FGT

Nice straw man/red herring combo there, anti-cancer-research-Mayweather. If you equate “adding cushioned seats” to the identification of the primary genes that cause cancer, finding the specific proteins those genes produce that inhibit tumor cell growth, utilizing these discoveries to indefinitely prolong the lives of certain types of cancer patients, releasing several drugs that can both prevent and treat certain types of cancer, releasing fucking cancer vaccines, discovering different classifications of what was previously thought to be the same type of cancer (and therefore requiring different treatments), and altogether uncovering vast amounts of information about how and why cancer forms (allowing us to attack the sources of the problem)…then you are literally too stupid to insult (also, all of those advances have come in the last 40 years).

Your flu argument is fucking nonsense too. Just because the flu kills more people doesn’t mean cancer isn’t worth researching – the flu kills a much smaller percentage of those who contract it than cancer does…but that’s not an argument against funding research for the flu, it’s an argument for funding research for both. The fact of the matter is that you clearly know nothing about what you’re saying – which is fine – arguing about things you know nothing about is FAF. The difference is most of us argue about the reasons our neighbors are clearly overreacting with their noise complaints, while you’re arguing about something that kills millions of people each year – so expect some backlash for your fucking stupidity. When you or someone close to you develops cancer, go ahead and avoid treatment since it’s “obviously” worthless.

God fucking damnit, this bitch has me feeding trolls. If your main argument is that we haven’t progressed fast enough to continue trying to end cancer, then we might as well stop fighting for our freedom since, after 200 years as a sovereign nation, politicians are still trying to take it away from us. Go fuck yourself bitch.

Kid, you’re getting a lot of hate on here, but I’m going to say you’re partially right…although you’re taking the things you do know about cancer and forming conclusions that are not entirely accurate. I’m starting off by saying I acknowledge you probably know more than the majority of people here, so at least hear me out, because your opinion is not an uncommon one and it’s actually very harmful to cancer research progress.

You’re right, cancer is “incurable” because it is not a “disease” in the same sense as any other disease. As you’ve said in other places in this thread, cancer is the result of aging. This occurs when the telomeres on the end of a chromosome run out and the chromosomes start to lose actual bits of genetic material when they replicate. That’s why geneticists will say that if someone lives long enough, they will absolutely die of cancer due to this process. Where you’re wrong is that you assume this process is constant, that it is inevitable in all people, and that “cures” are just ways of sucking money out of people that don’t know any better.

First, the enzyme telomerase replaces our telomeres after replication when we are young, but we eventually run out of telomerase and the cell replication process eventually starts cutting into the actual telomeres. This is because our bodies create telomerase at a rate that was sufficient for humans’ initial age expectancy (30-40), and the process breaks down in our 40s since we have only recently begun to outlive this expectancy and evolution has not caught up with it (recently being a relative term in the long history of evolution). Our telomeres eventually get used up, resulting in the loss of actual genetic information, resulting in genetic mutations. A huge portion of cancer research surrounds finding what genes dictate the production of telomerase and how they can be manipulated to speed up and prolong the production of telomerase, effectively ending the cause of cancer (or delaying it until much, much later in our lives).

Second, there are genes that speed this process up in certain people, and another portion of cancer research is devoted to finding ways to shut off these genes.

Third, the loss of genetic material at the ends of chromosomes is not in and of itself deadly, because our chromosomes are insanely long and this loss of genetic information is negligible. The deadly aspect comes from the mutations that result from this loss of genetic material, but again, a large portion of cancer research is dedicated to slowing or preventing the mutation process after genetic material has been lost.

Finally, once mutations begin, they spread to other parts of the body by seeping into the bloodstream and moving to other more crucial areas of the body such as the brain and the lymph nodes. Another area of cancer research is dedicated to keeping mutations localized to slow the process of the cancer killing the patient.

So you’re absolutely right, cancer is not curable because it’s not caused by a virus or bacteria like other diseases. But no, cancer research is not hopeless and is certainly not a scam. You’re also right that close to 80% of donations end up going to run the administrative costs of the charities, but you’re wrong in assuming this is a bad thing. Charity organizations with expensive administrative costs have been proven to be more effective at distributing funds to those who need it than organizations that give 100% of donations away. Think about it – if you donate money to a charity that builds houses in third world countries and they give 100% of the proceeds to the third world countries, that money is likely going to be used inefficiently or fall into the hands of their corrupt governments. But if you donate to a charity that has employees working full time to ensure the money that does go to those countries is used in the way it was intended, it will be used more efficiently and result in a better positive impact. I’m not saying I’m happy with the majority of my charity money going to pay some desk jockey, but if that is a necessary evil in making sure the rest of my money is used effectively I’ll live with it. Maybe we should be trying to lower this number from 80% to something like 40-50%, and if that is your argument I’m on board.

I respect you for knowing more about cancer than most people here (probably…I’m not second guessing the vast knowledge localized on totalfratmove.com), but you’re taking your limited knowledge and drawing conclusions that are beyond your level of education on the subject. You’ll probably disagree with me and I’ll probably get laps for this, but congratulations on soliciting one of the few serious responses I’ve ever given on this website.

Actually, this particular fundraiser is crazy efficient. THON itself spent only 4.1% of money raised on administrative costs with zero paid employees. Essentially the expenses all dealt with THON weekend itself. The organization that the money is donated to, the Four Diamonds Fund, only spends 7% on administrative fees. So, just under 90% of money raised is going directly to either paying for medical bills for Four Diamonds families or research.
