Legends Of Golf Cinema: Part 1

Happy Gilmore

“During high school, I played junior hockey and still hold two league records: most time spent in the penalty box, and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody.”

Adam Sandler is known for casting himself in obnoxious, nonsensical, laugh at my own jokes kinds of roles these days, but Happy Gilmore is probably the best of those irreverent, dickhead characters that he’s created, written, and starred as.

A childhood sports favorite for those of us who can legally drink, Happy Gilmore embodies the perfect combination of insensitive comedic stupidity mixed with golf, lust for good looking women, and a never say die sense of competition – much like an evening spent pounding drafts at the local clubhouse.

From slapshot-styled drives (which you’ve admittedly tried at least once), to beating rival Shooter McGavin with an improbable last shot to win the gold jacket and regain possession of his grandmother’s house so that he can slam out that minx Virginia, Gilmore pulled some wonderful moves to making the 1996 film one of golf’s best comedy satires.

The scene where Happy fist fought Bob Barker at the pro-am after letting that heckler’s taunts get the best of him has to be one of the most notoriously quoted ever in knockout situations.

I do. It was literally the ONLY link I could find with that epic scene. Plus, there’s no dialogue in that putt sinking sequence anyway.

Anyone else posting up on the couch tomorrow and watching the Masters all day? Damn, I’m so excited.

If you haven’t been at the driving range and try a happy Gilmore and just completely whiff your lying.

The player/caddy relationship between Rannulph Junuh and Bagger Vance is just so perfectly racist.
