Legends Of Golf Cinema: Part 1

Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy

“I tend to think of the golf swing as a poem…”

Arguably Kevin Costner’s best role ever, good ‘ole Tin Cup is a shining example of a golfer that’s just TFTC. McAvoy, an extremely skilled prodigy turned Texas driving range owner, was off the course for years before being convinced to take the sport up again (with some help from that sexy clinical psychologist, Dr. Molly Griswald) and eventually qualifies for the U.S. Open.

Employing his friend Cheech Marin to caddy for him, Tin Cup’s antics include drinking heavily, dismissing children’s requests for autographs, and a few classic club throws, all while surrounded by a cameo cast of PGA pros including Phil Mickelson, Lee Janzen, Jim Nantz and Peter Jacobsen.

Famously, McAvoy goes on to hole-out with a twelve on the 18th green in the final round of the Open Championship, demanding ball after ball in an attempt to clear the water and nail a shot he hadn’t made successfully all tournament. However, the scene is one of the all-time greatest showings of determination, forever immortalizing Costner on the fictional golf course.

As Dr. Griswald (Rene Russo) tells him, “Five years from now nobody will remember who won or lost, but they’re gonna remember your 12!”

Despite not winning the Open, McAvoy’s Top 15 finish was enough to qualify him for the Tour the next year.

I do. It was literally the ONLY link I could find with that epic scene. Plus, there’s no dialogue in that putt sinking sequence anyway.

If you haven’t been at the driving range and try a happy Gilmore and just completely whiff your lying.

The player/caddy relationship between Rannulph Junuh and Bagger Vance is just so perfectly racist.
