Love This Yankee’s Prospect Asking The Team To Un-Retire Mickey Mantle’s Number

Look, Mickey Mantle was a certified stud in pinstripes and — more importantly — off the diamond. No one’s arguing that. He was able to hit 536 bombs essentially on one giant 18 year bender of a career. I mean the man started every morning with a shot of brandy and a glass of Kahlúa and cream before going out and raking with the best of ’em for nearly two decades. I have nothing but the utmost respect for this fallen legend. That said, I absolutely love the moxie out of this New York Yankee’s Triple-A prospect Clint Frazier who asked the team to un-retire The Mick’s number so he could rock the “7” on his own back.

From Deadspin:

On WFAN today, Yankees radio broadcaster Suzyn Waldman told Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts that highly touted Yankees prospect Clint Frazier asked the Yankees “if they ever un-retire numbers.” As if that question wasn’t batshit enough, Waldman says Frazier wanted to wear No. 7, which once belonged to a little-known Yankees player named Mickey Mantle.

I want all the Clint Frazier stock you can sell me and then some. Kid hasn’t even stepped into the box for a major league at bat and he’s trying to bounce Mickey Mantle from the rafters. So cocky. So delusional. I need that type of attitude in my opening day lineup. Forget anyone that’s come before you, because you’re the one that’s going to put asses in the seats. Mickey was great and all, but now he’s fucking dead.

Why stop at “7” though, Clint? How about you rotate numbers every game? Babe Ruth? Total has been. Throw on the number 3 and call your shot during your first AB. The number 5? Say you’re paying homage when you break Joey D’s hit streak in his own uniform. 42? People are saying Clint Frazier could be the Jackie Robinson of gingers when it’s all said and done.

Their general manager and a bunch of other staff on the Yankees already said this never happened and it was fake news. Sad!

If he wants to get called up to The Show, he better start respecting the legacy of the team that he’s aspiring to play for. Kid’s shooting himself in the foot here.

With a .230 batting average in AAA, his chances of being called up are pretty slim already. I peg him as a guy who will be bounced around a few clubs until he ends up retiring

If you’re going to call a person a fuckwit, proofread before you hit send. A lot of people bat better than me, that’s a fact I will not deny. Doesn’t mean they’re going to the Bigs. Anyways this story turned out to be false.

This guy was one of the two major prospects New York picked up from Cleveland in the trade for Andrew Miller. I wouldn’t write him off just yet.
