This Map Of U.S. Alcohol Consumption Has Me Respecting The Hell Out Of The Midwest
Recently, the team over at Project Know took a survey of over 1,400 college students, asking them a variety of questions about their experiences and habits with drinking and partying in college. They used a lot of what they found to put together a map of college drinking across the country. Here’s the map.
From Project Know:
The Midwest had the largest percentage of participants who told us they drank in college – over 92 percent. The Midwest also has the highest concentration of binge drinkers in the U.S.
The Midwest may also attribute its drinking habits to its severely cold winters. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) has been found to have a negative emotional impact on college students and can be responsible for causing depression which can lead to excessive drinking.
I’m honestly not too surprised about the Midwest taking the cake here. After all, Wisconsin holds 12 of the 20 drunkest cities in the nation. That 92% mark makes the West look like a monastery in comparison, and I have to think that my home state of Utah is driving our average down by at least two or three percentage points.
The least surprising thing about this map is that the South isn’t too far behind the Midwest when it comes to hitting the bottle. In my experience, the South is a lot like the Midwest, but it’s warmer and your chances of hearing banjos in the forest are much greater. As for the Midwest’s link to Seasonal Affective Disorder, I’m not sure I’m buying into that correlation. We have SAD out west too, and we’ve opted for a crippling opioid problem instead of excessive drinkng. Ha, that’ll show the Midwest!.

Can confirm the Midwest offers nothing during winter other than drinking or leaving for somewhere more fun.
9 years ago at 11:48 amPretty much the same during summer as well
9 years ago at 3:37 pmFuck you
9 years ago at 11:08 pmYou obviously have never been to a mansion on a lake in Northern Michigan then.
9 years ago at 10:40 amThe South comes in second despite holding the Bible Belt. Strong Christians definitely skew the numbers out here.
9 years ago at 11:56 amBaptists love their small towns and local government… and making sure no one ever changes anything or touches alcohol.
9 years ago at 2:57 pmAnytime there are four Baptists, there is always a fifth.
A Baptist in Alabama told me that.

9 years ago at 12:11 pmSince when is fucking Delaware and Maryland is the south?
9 years ago at 12:12 pmIn*
9 years ago at 12:13 pmThe Maryland border with Pennsylvania was the Mason Dixon line, so it sits below that line. But it also remained part of the Union. Seems a lot like Kentucky, not exactly Northern but certainly not Southern. Either way fucking Delaware is not a part of the South.
9 years ago at 2:31 pmAccording to our Census Bureau, they’re both in the South, both in the South Atlantic division. No fucking clue how a Union border state became classified as a southern state.
9 years ago at 2:55 pmThe Mason Dixon line is an arbitrary border. It means nothing. Having lived in the South and Maryland, it is not the South in any fashion
9 years ago at 6:41 pmEver been to Western Maryland or the Eastern Shore? It’s far more Southern in culture / temperament / politics than it is Northern; you’ll find plenty of Confederate battle flags.
9 years ago at 4:01 pmEver been to backwoods Pennsylvania, you’ll find the same thing. What you see there is more of an urban/rural distinction rather than a north south one.
9 years ago at 10:23 pmThat’s why Midwest chicks are huge
9 years ago at 12:19 pmThey all look the same in the dark
9 years ago at 1:07 pmPussy doesn’t have a face
9 years ago at 2:30 pmI’m no statistician but only 1400 students for all 50 states is a very weak sample size…
9 years ago at 1:07 pmOnly reason why the west is losing here is because of fucking Utah. They lowered that percentage down a lot.
9 years ago at 1:15 pmSo Rob Fox is gone now too. What the fuck is going on at Grandex?
9 years ago at 1:40 pmWhere’d you see this?
9 years ago at 1:44 pmHe’s no longer on the Grandex site. His picture was there last week and it’s been removed.
9 years ago at 1:45 pmMadison must be purging anyone he didn’t actually go to school with…
9 years ago at 1:47 pmAnother one bites the dust. How Wally has somehow made it through can-megeddon and everyone is getting the axe is beyond me.
9 years ago at 1:48 pm@Dave
9 years ago at 6:44 pmI feel like the West is at quite a disadvantage with two BYUs.
9 years ago at 1:48 pmgot to keep warm somehow
