Massive Sinkhole Swallows Classic Corvettes

One of the more iconic American car brands suffered a real tragedy yesterday, as eight Corvettes were swallowed up by a sinkhole in the middle of the National Corvette Museum. Two of the cars that fell in were the 1 millionth and the 1.5 millionth Corvettes ever made. A 40th anniversary Ruby Red Corvette also fell into the sinkhole.

“This is going to be an interesting situation,” Museum Executive Director Wendell Strode said.

An interesting situation? That’s really the best you could come up with? How often does a giant sinkhole open up in the middle of a museum and swallow iconic cars? I would have said something more like this: “Holy shit! Did you guys see that giant hole in the middle of our museum? You know all those nice cars that were in the middle? Yeah. All gone. Who knew that building a museum on top a sinkhole was a bad idea?” Then again, my aversion to being politically correct is probably why I’m not a museum director.

What kind of thoughts are running through your head if you’re the guy who was in charge of the museum’s placement? Your only job was to make sure you made something that wasn’t going to collapse someday.

“You know what would be cool? Having a museum that might collapse if some guy who’s had one too many McDoubles gets excited and starts jumping up and down.”

If you’re Corvette, you can at least take solace in the fact that you didn’t pull an Ole Miss and try to build your new parking garage on top of a bunch of dead bodies. I hear that gives you 10 years bad luck or something like that.
