Mexican Government Rules Out Murder In Amherst College Student’s Death, Contradicting Family’s Claim
It has been almost two months since the tragic death of Amherst College senior Andrew Dorogi. The star football player was set to return from spring break in Mexico with his friends when his body was found on a stretch of train tracks near Mexico City. There has been some frustration over how the Mexican government is handling its investigation of Andrew’s case since its inception, with the Dorogi family being especially vocal with their displeasure.
In recent comments made to the Boston Globe, Andrew’s grandfather, Joseph Dorogi said, “I don’t think the Mexican government is really doing that much.” And in that same article, the Boston Globe reports that the Dorogi family believes that Andrew may have been murdered.
Mexican government officials have now fired back with a statement of their own to refute the family’s claim.
From Boston Globe:
The Mexican government said Monday that an Amherst College student found dead in Mexico City in March was not murdered, contradicting the family’s recent claims.
In a statement, Mexican authorities said that Andrew Dorogi’s body, which was found on train station tracks on March 15, did not have “any signs of violence, physical aggression, or defending wounds. Therefore, a murder has been ruled out as cause of death.”

Mexican authorities then continued to elaborate on what evidence they have procured up to this point.
In its statement, the Mexican government said Dorogi had traveled to the airport in Mexico City to catch a connecting flight to New York, but “never took the flight.”
“Instead, he exited the airport and asked for directions to the metro station, according to witnesses’ accounts and video footage,” authorities said.
The statement added that the Mexico City attorney general’s office, which is investigating Dorogi’s death, has offered to meet with the family to “provide an explanation of the incident” and show them video footage.
A spokesman for the attorney general’s office said Monday that the case remains under investigation and declined to comment on what he called “new elements that clarify what happened.”
There are a lot of question marks here. Is Mexico telling the truth? If so: Why leave the airport? Where was Andrew going? Was this a tragic accident, or something more? And, if their statement is indeed accurate, it seems that Mexican officials are close to answering these questions.
Obviously the loss of a loved one — especially in a foreign country where you can’t really keep tabs on what’s going on — is incredibly difficult. Here’s to hoping the investigation wraps up soon and the Dorogi family gets all the answers they seek..
